Apple Enhances Token Ring Connectivity Product Offerings

Apple Announces New Apple Token Ring NuBus Card and Improved Performance
with New Network Installer Software

CUPERTINO, California--April 25, 1994--Apple Computer, Inc. today announced
enhancements to its Token Ring product offerings with the new Apple Token
Ring NuBus (NB/c) Card and a new version of its Network Installer, version
1.4.5. The Apple Token Ring NB/c Card delivers superior network
performance, and provides the flexibility of connecting to both local area
network (LAN) and mainframe-based services.

Version 1.4.5 of the Network Installer provides twice the throughput of
previous versions of the network software and provides support for a wide
range of protocols including AppleTalk , TCP/IP and IPX. While the Apple
Token Ring NB/c Card ships with new network software, owners of older
Apple Token Ring 4/16 NB Card will be able to benefit from the same
performance enhancements by obtaining an upgrade to version 1.4.5 of the
Network Software Installer which is available free of charge.

"The Token Ring platform is very important to our connectivity products
strategy. We recognize that many enterprise customers have large Token
Ring networks that connect Macintosh desktop and portable computers to
applications and services which reside on IBM Mainframes, Novell Netware
Servers and IBM AS/400s," said Karen Quek, product manager for the
Connectivity Products Business Unit. "The Apple Token Ring NB/c Card also
fulfills Apple's commitment to migrate all connectivity cards to the
compact form factor to fit into any NuBus-based Macintosh including the
Power Macintosh 6100."

Product Description

The Apple Token Ring NB/c Card is a seven-inch, IBM-compatible token ring
card that complements Apple's existing Token Ring products. Like all of
our existing LocalTalk , Ethernet, and Token Ring products, the Apple
Token Ring NB/c Card is fully Power Macintosh compatible. The Token Ring
NB/c Card comes with an industry standard DB-9 port which allows
connections to IEEE 802.5 and 802.2 industry standard Token Ring networks
at 4 or 16 megabits per second (Mbps). The card is based on the IBM Token
Ring chipset, ensuring compatibility and interoperability with all IBM
Token Ring networks. Additionally, the card also supports a variety of
software environments, and is compatible with existing network services
and applications such as file servers, print servers, mainframe
connections, electronic mail, and databases including Insignia's
SoftWindows, Novell NetWare Servers, IBM's Mainframe, and AS/400 SNA
environments via Apple's SNA%ps 3270 and 5250 products.

Owners of the current Apple Token Ring 4/16 NB Card and other networking
cards, including the Apple Ethernet NB Cards, Apple Ethernet LC Cards, and
Apple Ethernet CS Cards, can upgrade their software to version 1.4.5 of
the Network Software Installer, available free of charge, by downloading
the software from AppleLink , Internet and Developer CDs. Customers may
also obtain upgrades by faxing their name, address and telephone number to
the ABS Network Information Line at (408) 974-7977.

System Requirements

The Apple Token Ring NB/c Card requires one available Macintosh NuBus slot
and an IEEE 802.5 Token Ring Media Access Unit (MAU). It works with all
Macintosh models with a NuBus slot including all Macintosh II, Centris,
Quadra, and Apple Workgroup Server models as well as all Power Macintosh
computers.
