U.S. ROBOTICS INTRODUCES NEW TOTAL CONTROL ENTERPRISE NETWORK HUB/6

New, Smaller Hub Uses Existing Modem, Gateway and Management Cards; Product
Targeted to Branch Office, Educational and Business Markets

SKOKIE, Ill. -- May 2, 1994 -- U.S. Robotics, Inc. today announced a new
version of its Total Control Enterprise Network Hub. The new chassis has
six slots, versus the company's current 16-slot chassis, providing a
small, cost-effective WAN communications platform. The product will be
available in May, 1994.

Total Control products support multiple protocols and interfaces,
integrating complete LAN/WAN connectivity in a single chassis. The new
design accommodates organizations that need a product to handle their wide
area network communications, but don't require a full 16 slots for their
applications.

Examples of target markets include branch offices, distributed networks,
universities and many businesses. Typical applications for the Enterprise
Network Hub/6 will include modem pooling, remote access, Internet access
and others.

"Companies of any size need to communicate to and from their networks,"
said Jonathan Zakin, U.S. Robotics executive vice president. "Our new
Total Control chassis provides a more cost effective solution for smaller
organizations, and also gives large companies a WAN communications
solution for their branch offices."

"As applications like remote access and telecommuting become more
entrenched in corporate America, products like the Enterprise Network Hub
are critical to keeping organizations connected," added Zakin. "There is a
significant potential for growth in this market, driven by organizations
developing their communications capabilities to accommodate these kinds of
applications. "

The six-slot chassis may be used with any current Total Control modem and
gateway cards, including Ethernet, Token-Ring and X.25 interfaces, quad
modem cards, T-l and fractional T-l devices and LAN Access Server cards.
The new product is designed to be compatible with existing Total Control
cards, simplifying configuration for both Total Control resellers and
customers.

The new six-slot chassis also includes SNMP management capabilities, for
local or remote management from U.S. Robotics' Total Control Manager or
from existing platforms such as OpenView, SunNet Manager and Netview
6000.

The Enterprise Network Hub and Transaction Processing Hub are logical
extensions of the company's Total Control product line; U.S. Robotics'
Total Control line of intelligent modem management systems, introduced in
1990, was the company's first entry into this market.

The Enterprise Network Hub enables organizations with remote locations,
telecommuters and mobile employees to aggregate their dial traffic onto
T-l lines and route it through a packet-switched network to their host
computer at a central site. The Transaction Processing Hub reduces
verification times for credit card, point-of-sale, and inquiry/response
transaction processing applications by interfacing with local exchange
carrier services, such as Feature Group B and D.

Both products use a common architecture, which consists of a 1 Gbps
midplane, and circuit and packet-switched buses to minimize processing
time. Through downloadable software-defined technology, U.S. Robotics can
easily modify and enhance its products to take advantage of new and
emerging technologies.
