MetaWare Announces DirectToSOM Support in High C/C++

San Jose, CA, March 15, 1994-- MetaWare Incorporated announced today
DirectToSOM support for IBM's System Object Model (SOM) and cross-platform
Distributed SOM (DSOM) support in High C/C++ for OS/2 2.1 and IBM RS/6000.
DirectToSOM permits a software developer to create SOM binaries simply by
compiling standard C++ source code.

Ben Watson, MetaWare's President, said, "SOM and DSOM, which are key
elements of IBM's SOMobjects technologies, are important steps in
advancing C++ as a commercially-viable language. Before SOMobjects, the
binary format for C++ prevented mixing code from different compilers.
SOMobjects defines a binary standard that removes that barrier. MetaWare
has worked closely with IBM to create the first DirectToSOM C++
compilers."

The availability of these compilers means, for example, that third-party
class library providers no longer need to ship their source code on OS/2
and RS/6000; only the SOM objects are needed. Later, the SOM objects can
be replaced without recompiling other dependent objects. A similar
advantage exists for in-house developers; the source code is controlled in
one place and derived sub-classes do not need to be recompiled.

"Integrated DirectToSOM support in MetaWare's High C/C++ compiler is a
first-class combination that will help deliver the promise of C++ as an
O-O development environment," said Cliff Reeves, Program Director of IBM's
Object Technology Products group in Austin, Texas. "We are very excited
about MetaWare's commitment to the SOMobjects technology."

Both of the announced compilers include SOM and DSOM kernel code which is
licensed from IBM. That combination provides a convenient "one-stop
shopping" package for a software developer. A developer can move existing
C++ code to SOM by re-compiling; all of the supporting components are
included. Thereafter recompiling will be needed only when source code
changes are made. MetaWare High C/C++ for IBM RS/6000 and MetaWare High
C/C++ for OS/2 2.1 are now shipping.
