SOFTWARE SECURITY'S NEW UNIKEY/NET WILL MANAGE LICENSES; PERFORM REMOTE
TRANSACTIONS

SAN JOSE, CA, March 15, 1994 -- UniKey/NET, the first network-based
software protection system that utilizes only one hardware key and
patented technology to provide license management and remote transactions,
is being exhibited by Software Security, Inc. in Booth 1245 at Software
Development '94.

This system manages licenses by controlling the number of concurrent users
application running on a network. As an option, UniKey/NET offers the
industry's only remote transaction capability for adding or modifying
licenses using Software Security's patented software distribution system.
A special metering device allows the developer to perform remote
transactions through a software routine that utilizes the unique
identifier or serial number of each hardware key. Thus developers change
the number of licensed users or even add new products by telephone.

An additional option is AEGIS/NET which provides instant implementation
without programming. AEGIS/NET automatically encrypts the executable code,
linking it to the hardware key. Implementation can be completed in
minutes.

Basic UniKey/NET consists of three parts: the hardware device, or key, that
attaches to the serial port on the file server, either an NLM (NetWare
Loadable Module) or TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) program tnat
executes on the server under a network operating system, and ToolBox, a
software package that facilitates the incorporation of UniKey/NET into the
application.

A single UniKey/NET hardware key can be used by one or several developers
to protect multiple software applications on a network. Each key can
simultaneously protect many applications. UniKey/NET accommodates
environments with multiple security and file servers.

The hardware key contains the names of all protected applications and
number of licenses available as well as non-volatile memory that the
developer can use as desired. For example, a twenty-user license would
allow any twenty users to nJn a particular program concurrently from
workstations on the network. To prevent unauthorized changes, this
information exists in an encrypted format.

In multiple server environments, UniKey/NET will automatically search for
an available license in a connected server when all licenses on the first
server are taken. Under Novell Netware, if no licenses are available when
a user logs on, UniKey/NET will maintain a list of applicants and will
notify that user when a license becomes available. If that user does not
log on within a specified period of time, the next one in line will be
notified.

An NLM for Novell Neworks, or TSR for NetBios networks, serves as a
supervisor that receives and services messages from client workstations
and other file servers. It checks for the presence of the hardware device
and availability of license at startup time and will exit if the device is
not connected or if it is removed while programs are in use. All messages
to and from the workstation and other file servers are in encrypted
format, as are all hardware-access functions.

The ToolBox, generated uniquely for each developer, is a library of
functions that are linked with the developer's source code. ToolBox
provides a simple interface that allows a developer to access the hardware
key and program it to perform various security functions.

In instances where a user wants to use a protected application on a
computer that is not connected to the network, such as a laptop or
workstation at home, the developer can provide a single user device, the
Activator/M, to activate the application.

Prices start at $87.50 for a single user on a network with an added $2.50
each per user. After 50 users, there is no additional user fee.
