Insider's Guide to dBASE IV 2.0 from Van Nostrand Reinhold

dBASE IV 2.0 for DOS
by Sumant Pendharkar and Richard Biegel

Van Nostrand Reinhold has announced the release of dBASE IV 2.0 for DOS, a
comprehensive, one-of-a-kind handbook for understanding dBASE IV 2.0.
Written from the unique perspective of two members of Borland's support
hotline team, it includes everything real users want and need tn know to
get the most out of the latest version of dBASE IV.

"This book provides a solid foundation in the essentials of dBASE IV 2.0,
as well as answers to users' most commonly asked questions--all from
experts who have been on the frontlines every day fielding calls to
Borland's support staff," says co-author Sumant Pendharkar, a software
support specialist for Borland International.

Unlike other books on the market, dBASE IV 2.0 for DOS provides the
guidance users really want. Aimed at everyone from novices to systems
analysts, it includes clear and precise responses to the 150 questions
most often asked by customers seeking help from Borland's technical
support staff, as well as to questions about the new version 2.0 of dBASE
IV.

The authors have found that many customers want to be "walked though menu
driven utilities, a time-consuming process not covered by other books. For
that reason, dBASE IV 2.0 for DOS includes "walkthrough" exercises
complete with explanatory screen illustrations that help make the
program's menu system easy to understand.

The book also features a special section on the often frustrating process
of printing out dBASE files, as well as tips to turn beginners into power
users and a discussion of the program's new memory management features.

Thanks to its easy-to-use format, the book should save users hours of
wasted time on the phone. The average call to Borland's Support Center
takes about 25 minutes, not counting hold time.

Sumant Pendharker has an M.S. in Business Information Systems and Computer
Science. He has published several articles on dBASE IV and currently is a
support specialist at Borland. Richard Biegel has a B.A. in Computer
Science and a B.S. in Psychology; he is now employed at Ingres. He is
involved in testing dBASE IV on UNIX and VMS and has written articles on
this subject.

Since its founding in 1948, Van Nostrand Reinhold (VNR) has pioneered the
publication of high-quality engineering, technical and scientific
reference books. VNR's computer book group, founded in 1978, publishes an
extensive list of timely, high-level technical books for computer
professionals and business executives in any industry. The books are
written by industry authorities in each subject area and are often
published in cooperation with leading hardware and software vendors. All
VNR titles can be purchased through the Van Nostrand Reinhold Bookstore
Cafe, the newest online shopping service on CompuServe's Electronic Mall,
as well as through major book chains, independent book stores, book
