OPENING A FILE
Using the mouse, move the cursor to the "File" menu located in
the upper left portion of the screen. Click once and the
features located in the menu will be displayed. Move the cursor
to the "New" feature and click once. A Quick-Step Design edit
screen will appear in a portion of the computer screen.

THE SCREEN
To enlarge or maximize the edit screen, move the cursor to the
arrow pointing upward in the upper right corner of the page and
click once. Then move the cursor to the "Options" menu and
activate the "Fit to Window" feature by clicking once on it.

BASIC FEATURES
You will find one dialog box in addition to the field, pull-down
menus, and scroll bars. The Tool Palette, just under the menu
bar, provides features for drawing, writing, and highlighting.
The arrow edit icon allows you to select, or highlight, symbols.
Symbols must be highlighted in order to be edited.

QUICK ACCESS PANEL
Immediately above the yardline numbers is the "quick access panel".
These icons represent commonly used features which can be quickly
activated by simply clicking on any of them. You can also find each
of these features in the pull-down menus. The yellow arrows allow
you to move from page to page, either forward or backward. The
magnifying glasses allow you to zoom in and out of the picture.
The green football field allows you to move to the perspective/animation
field.

STATUS BAR
Above the Quick Access Panel is the Quick-Step Design "Status Bar"
which gives you the total number of players placed on the screen
(this accumulates the number as you place additional players),
vertical position coordinate, and horizontal position coordinate.
Information on coordinate options is provided in the Options Menu -
Backgrouad Feature.

PULL-DOWN MENUS
There are seven pull down menus with over 65 features for your use.
Most of the features have a corresponding key stroke command. We
recommend that you peruse all of the options. Many are common to
all "windows" software, while others are unique to "Quick-Step Design".

SYMBOL MENU
The symbol menu is one of the most flexible options offered by
Quick-Step Design with over 1,000 symhols available. You may select
geometric shapes, arabic numerals, and letters of the alphabet. You can
show a single character, a character with a dot, a labeled character,
and a dot only. There are many fonts to choose from which allow for
a wide variety of pre-set geometric shapes. You can change the point
size (we recommend you experiment with point size as you change the font).

In order to activate the symbol menu, click on the "blue flag" icon located
in the Placement Options Dialogue Box. The "Symbol Options" dialogue box
will appear on the screen. First select a font by clicking on the font
name found in the upper left corner. The symbols are displayed on a
typewriter keyboard. Additioaal symbols can be found by clicking on the
"shift" button. Click on the desired symbol. It will be displayed in
the upper-right corner. You will also want to select the display
option (single character, dot only, etc.). Once you have chosen the
symbol, click on the "OK" button. This will return you to the edit screen.

OPTIONS MENU
We recommend that you first peruse the "Options" menu. Click once on
the menu and the features will be displayed. Click on the "Display"
feature to find what options are available. The "Page Display" will
allow you to view 1) just the current page only, 2) the previous page
(in gray) and the cunent page, or 3) the following page (in blue) and
the current page. In addition, you can choose to show player facings
and paths. The "Trace Selected Forms" option should be left activated,
for it is an important feature when working in animation.

Return to the *Options" menu and select the ~Background" feature. The
"Backgrounds" dialogue box will appear which allows you to choose either
a "Football Field" or "Winter Guard Court". Select the "Football Field"
option by clicking once on the words "Football Field" (it will be blue)
and then click once on the "Options" button. The "Football Field Options"
dialogue box will appear on the screen. You have options in "Grid
Resolution" (or step size), "Sideline to Sideline Depth" (most people
choose 52.5 yards), Grid Style (either grid dots or lines), Hash Mark
Placement based upon the stadium (NFL, NCAA, or High School), Grid Color
(gray or black), and Coordinate Style. After you have selected your
options, click on the "OK" button. This will return you to the Backgrounds
dialogue box and click on the "OK" button. The options will be found on
the edit field. We recommend that you experiment with the various options
available to you.

CHARTING WITH QUICK-STEP DESIGN
This tutorial will present basic information on charting with Quick-Step
Design. There are countless other features available that can be determined
through experimentation. This section of the tutorial will deal with three
types of placement options (linear, arc, and french curves), selection or
highlighting, editing features for changing the number of players per
form and the interval of players, mirror copy, perspective view, and
animation.

PLACEMENT OPTIONS
Linear Placement: In order to draw a line in a vertical, horizontal, or
angle position click once on the diagonal line found in the tool palette.
Tbe cursor will change from an arrow to a "cross-hair". Move the cursor
to the intersection of the the 40 yard line and near hash mark. Click/Drag
to the right by holding down the left mouse button and moving the mouse to
the right. A line will be formed which can be manipulated (expanded,
contracted, etc.). Place the right "end point" on the 30 yard line and
16 steps down from the near hash mark so that a diagonal line is drawn.
In addition to the line, you will see three boxes, or "handles", which
are used to further manipulate the line. The "handles" found at the end
points allow you to change the end points. To change the end points,
place the cursor on the handle and click/drag to the new position. You
may now change the line from diagonal to horizoatal, etc. If you want to
maintain the line, but change its position on the field, place the cursor
on the middle handle and click/drag to a new location. In order to place
symbols in place of the line, click on the "OK" button found in the
Placement Options dialogue box. You will notice that it displays 22 marchers
in the "Player Count" at an "Interval" of 2.0 steps. Click once on the "OK"
button and the 22 symbols are placed along the line.

Arc Placement: An arc is defined as part of a circle, which should be
different than a curve, or skewed arc. To activate this option, click
once on the arc found on the "Tool Palette". You will use the same
routine for building an arc as you did with the linear option: 1) select
an end point, 2) click/drag to the other end point, 3) a line will be
formed while dragging to the second end point, 4) release the mouse
button when you arrive at the second end point, 5) the computer will
immediately form an arc which can be manipulated, 6) click/drag the
middle "handle" to alter the depth of the arc, 7) as you alter the depth
of the arc, you will notice that the "Player Count" changes immediately
to give you information on the number of players needed at the displayed
interval, 8) click on the "OK" button found in the "Placement Options" in
order to place symbols on the drawn arc.

French Curve: To draw complex curves which are common in contemporary
drill design, Quick-Step Design offers a unique and easy to use feature.
Select the "French Curve" option found to the right of the Arc in the "Tool
Palette". This time "double click" on the icon. A "French Curve Options"
dialogue box will be displayed which allows you to select the number of
knots used for manipulation of the line (the parameters are 2 to 10). Select
6 and click on the "OK" button. Once again, select an end point and
click/drag to a second end point. In addition to a line from end point
to end point, there now appear many "handles". To manipulate the line
into a curve, move any, some, or all of the "handles" by "click/dragging".
After you have designed the curve, click on the "OK" button in the
"Placement Options" dialogue box. The number of symbols at the specified
interval displayed will be placed along the curve.

EDITING NUMBER OF PLAYERS AND INTERVAL
The ability to change the number of players in a single element, form, or
total picture, as well as the interval of players is essential in drill
design. We believe that Quick-Step Design provides the easiest, fastest,
and most powerful tool for making these changes.

To "pre-set" the desired number of players in a form or the interval for
players in a form, highlight one option (player count or interval, but
not both) and enter the desired number. For example, if you want a line
at a 2.0 interval, simply do the following: 1) highlight the data space
for "lnterval", 2) enter 2.0, 3) select the linear placement tool icon,
4) select an end point and click/drag to the second end point, 5) as you
click/drag to the second end point, you will notice that the data (or
number of players for that form) in the "Player Count" is changing as you
move the cursor. The same process is followed if you would like to enter
a specific number of players in a form, but highlight the data space for
"Player Count" and enter the number of desired marchers. As you click/drag
to the second end point the data (or interval) will change as you move the
cursor.

To change the number of players in a previously cbarted form or the interval
of the players in a previously charted form, simply do the following:
1) highlight the form to be edited (methods for highlighting or selecting
will follow), 2) highlight the data space for either "Player Count" or
"Interval", 3) enter tbe desired change, 4) click the "OK" button,
5) the screen will "blink" and upon its return the desired change will be
charted. For example, draw an arc with 20 players at a 2 step interval.

Afterwards, we will edit it to 24 players at a 2 step interval. 1) highlight
the arc with 20 players at a 2 step interval, 2) highlight the data space
in "Player Count", 3) enter 24, 4) click on the "OK" button, 5) highlight
the data space in "Interval", 6) enter 2.0, 7) click on the "OK" button.
The arc has now been expanded to include 24 people at a 2.0 step interval.
You can make any modifications to number of players or interval.

If you would like to edit two or more forms (arcs, lines, curves, etc.),
simply do the following: 1) highlight each form, 2) move the cursor to
the "Forms" menu and "Group" feature, 3) click on "Group", 4) the multiple
number of forms have been grouped into one form, and 5) enter the desired
change in number of players or interval (follow above procedures).

SELECTION OR HIGHLIGHTING
In order to edit any individual symbol, form, or an entire set, the
symbol(s) must be highlighted or selected. You must do this for any
process which changes a charted player. When a symbol is selected it
becomes brighter, or highlighted. There are many methods to the selection
process. This tutorial will discuss four such methods. In addition to
these four there are another four methods. We believe we have devised
every possible method.

Select All: This is a common method found in most Windows applications. You
can select all players on the screen by moving to the "Edit" menu and
"Select All" feature. A second method is "Alt A" (hold down your "Alt"
key while you press down the "A" key.

Select Recent: This allows you to quickly highlight the most recent charted
form. Move to the "Edit" menu and "Select Recent" feature.

Alt Select: This allows you to quickly highlight any form charted on a page.
Hold the "Alt" key down while you "click" on a form. Only those symbols in
the form will be highlighted. For example, if you had drawn three arcs,
each with 20 players, you could highlight the first one drawn by 1) holding
the "Alt" key down and 2) clicking on any of the 20 symbols in the arc. Only
the first arc will have highlighted symbols.

Control Select: This allows you to highlight player symbols 1) in a specific
order and 2) from a form, but not all of the symbols. For example, if you
wanted to highlight only 10 of the 20 symbols in an arc: 1) hold the
"Control" key down and 2) click/drag over the specified 10 symbols.

PERSPECTIVE VIEW
Unless you have a large screen monitor (21"+), you will not be able to view
the entire football field on the edit screen. This "inconvenience" allows for
better quality printouts since the symbols on the page have greater detail.
Quick-Step Design does have a feature which allows you to view the entire
field in literally every perspective.

In order to move from the edit screen to the perspective view: 1) click on
the green football field found in the "Quick Access Bar", 2) the screen
will blink and the perspective viewing field will appear, 3) maximize the
screen by clicking on the "up" arrow found in the upper-right corner of the
screen. You will now see all 120 yards of the field length and the 53.33
yards width of the field. To return to the edit screen, click on the green
football field found in the quick access panel.

In order to view in any perspective, simply click on the "Pie" shaped form
in the upper-left portion of the screen. The perspective viewing field
will immediately "tilt" to the new degree of slope. To view from a
different orientation (front, back, side, or any of the 360 degrees
possible!), click on the "watch" shaped form in the upper-left portion of
the screen. The perspective viewing field will immediately change its
orientation. To return to the edit screen, click on the green football
field icon found in the quick access panel.

An Example To Chart
We have included an example of a four page drill for you to chart and
animate. You can find this exercise in completed form in the file
"tutorial.qsd" on your demo disk. You may find it helpful to load this
file and examine it while completing this example. (Another Quick-Step
Design feature: multiple files open at once and cutting/pasting between
them!) Some other example files have been included in this disk; we
encourage you to take a look at them to help appreciate the many features
of Quick-Step Design.

This will assist in the learning of this software product. Take your time
and learn the basics of Quick-Step Design.

flag symbols will be placed in a mirrored position on the screen.

19) you have completed page 2 of this sample drill. Continue reading the
directions to chart page 3.

Chart 3: to design this chart, you will need to use a common editing feature
of all software products: copy and paste. In this example, we will simply
copy what is on page 2 and paste it on to page 3. It is possible to copy
and paste from file to file; however, this simple example will give you the
knowledge needed to do other editing features.

1) move the cursor to the "Edit" menu. Activate the "Select All" feature.
All symbols on page 2 will become highlighted.

2) move back to the "Edit" menu and activate the "Copy" feature. The form
has been copied and is on a "clipboard" which saves the copied material
until you "Paste" it on to another page.

3) move to the "Next Page" by clicking on the right yellow arrow icon found
in the "Quick Access Panel."

4) you will see the previous positions in gray on page three. To place the
copied form on the screen, simply move the cursor to the "Edit" menu and
select the "Paste" feature. The form will be copied onto page 3.

5) when pasted on to page 3, the form remains highlighted. The drill
directions for this chart is to Forward March 16 steps. Simply move the
cursor to any symbol and click/drag towards the bottom of the screen so
that it is 16 steps from its starting position.

6) click anywhere on the screen, but not on a symbol, and all symbols will
become de-selected.

7) move to the "Next Page" by clicking on the right yellow arrow icon
found in the "Quick Access Panel".

Chart 4: You will use the curve and arc placement icons. Go back to the
symbol menu and select the dot symbol. Please refer to chart 4 found in the
"tutorial.qsd" file to assist you in designing this final form.

1) select the "Curve" placement icon from the Tools Palette. Double click on
the icon to select the number of knots. Choose 2.

2) move the cursor to coordinate: S45 - 7.0 and 4 steps behind the front
sideline. Click/drag the cursor to coordinate: S35 - 0.0 and 12 steps
behind the front sideline.

3) Click/drag the knots to shape the curve as shown in the diagram.

4) enter the following data in the Placement Options Dialogue Box:
player count 12 and interval 2.6 steps. Click on the "OK" button and
12 symbols will be placed along the curve.
