BUSINESSES EAGER TO HAVE CABLE OPERATORS SUPPLY COMMUNICATIONS, DATA
SERVICES OVER COAX

Digital Survey Reveals...

MAYNARD, Mass. -- March 14, 1994 -- A new survey has revealed that
businesses are extremely interested in having their high-speed data
communications needs supplied by cable television operators, Digital
Equipment Corporation announced today. In addition, Digital has found that
many cable operators are taking steps to prepare their plants for two-way,
high-speed data communications to take advantage of this major new
business opportunity.

"The speed, size, and enthusiasm of the response to the survey shows that
business wants high-speed, multimedia communications over cable's
broadband network, and wants it now," said Lois Levick, marketing manager
of Emerging Network Technologies for Digital's Network Product Business.
"Digital is ideally positioned to become a market leader with its
ChannelWorks products, which use the existing cable infrastructure to
provide easy, economical networking and access to the Information
Highway."

Survey Reveals Many Potential Applications

Digital distributed 73,000 surveys to government, education, health care,
and manufacturing companies, as well as to commercial Internet users,
asking how they might apply high-speed data communications over cable and
discussing the capabilities of ChannelWorks. Whereas a typical survey
response rate is 2%, to date 13% of the surveys, or just over 9,500, have
been returned.

The responses showed that corporations are interested in the cable network
because its combination of high bandwidth and multipoint distribution
allows them to implement multimedia applications such as manufacturing
design, video teleconferencing, distance learning, and telemedicine, as
well as to access the Internet and other on-line database services. Many
respondents also expressed interest in using cable for telecommuting, a
capability that will be optimized with Digital's next product offering,
which will be available later in 1995.

"People are eager to learn more about this new technology," said Levick.
"Many sent us personal notes saying they think business communications
over cable is a great idea -- perhaps the most significant new development
in information access. They'd love to be able to use the existing cable
infrastructure for the campus-wide and metropolitan-area networks and the
multimedia applications they are currently implementing. In fact, several
respondents offered to speak to other community members and to their cable
companies to help further the fast deployment of coax communications."

Cable Operators See New Sources of Revenue

In a second, complementary, campaign, Digital provided data on this new
business opportunity to nearly 3,500 cable operators and offered an
evaluation form to help them determine if their plants are ready for data
communications. Technical experts at Digital and its channel partners will
review the forms and work with cable companies to help them prepare for
the new technology. So far, the return rate has been 6.5%, with 230
requests for the form.

"Data communications over two-way activated cable is a tremendous business
opportunity," said John Liskey, director of government and public affairs
in Michigan for cable operator Tele-Communications, Inc., (TCI). "Since
last June, we've been successfully running several pilot projects in
healthcare, government and education using ChannelWorks in East Lansing.
Now we're setting up a commercial business there and are actively signing
up customers; the market is demand driven at this point. TCI's experience
has made me a believer in the potential of the Information Highway."

ChannelWorks Employs Existing Cable Infrastructure

Digital's ChannelWorks family allows computer systems to make a standard
10MB Ethernet connection over existing cable television wiring at
round-trip distances of up to 160 miles. ChannelWorks, manufactured by
LANcity, enables the creation of scalable, community-wide networks with a
distributed rather than a point-to- point configuration. Any application
that runs on a local area network in one building can now be run across an
entire community to everyone else who is served by a ChannelWorks
product.

Building on a strong tradition of technological excellence, Digital is
leading the way in the networking industry today. Digital is the only
company positioned by Datapro as a market leader for data over CATV, both
in network access equipment and in network infrastructure. And according
to revenue figures from International Data Corporation (IDC), Dataquest,
and Rising Star Research, Digital holds the number three market position
in routers, hubs, and LAN switching markets, and holds the number two
position in FDDI technology. Recently, the company pioneered a new,
converged model for networking, in which hubs, routers, and switches are
deployed on a single integrated platform. In addition, Digital's expertise
in network integration services has connected more than 12 million users
worldwide, making Digital an ideal partner to the cable industry as it
implements scalable networks for high-speed data communications.

Digital Equipment Corporation is the world's leader in open client/server
solutions from personal computing to integrated worldwide information
systems. Digital's scalable Alpha platforms, storage, networking,
software, and services, together with industry- focused solutions from
business partners, help organizations compete and win in today's global
marketplace.
