March 14, 1995 -- Two new interactive CD-ROM programs to help students who
are beginning to learn English are now available from Hartley Courseware.
Designed for students in grade four and up, each program helps build both
language and higher level thinking skills by presenting a variety of
everyday situations.

Home and Family offers seven different activities, showing full-color
scenes with animated, talking characters. Audio instructions, written
instructions, word processing activities, role-playing, and more bring
learners right into the action. In one activity, students work in a
fast-food restaurant, taking orders, receiving money, and giving change.
Additional activities introduce new vocabulary, verb forms, prepositions,
descriptive words, and more.

Neighborhood Life offers six activities containing sentences with a higher
level of grammatical complexity, and covering such skills as inferencing,
sequencing, alphabetizing, classifying, and more. Students learn how to
use an ATM machine, how to find information in a library, and explore the
mall, making shopping decisions.

A help screen is available if learners forget how to make a desired action
happen. Students can practice speaking by recording their own voices on
the computer. An option is also available for learners to type their own
words in the characters' speech bubbles.

Home and Family and Neighborhood Life are published by Jostens Home
Learning in San Diego, California.

The two programs, available for $99 each, operate on the Macintosh or on
Windows-compatible machines. For more information about adding these to
your life skills units, contact Hartley Courseware at 1-800-247-1380.
