IBM Demonstrates New Multimedia Server Solution at Networld + Interop

LAS VEGAS, NV, March 28, 1995...IBM today demonstrated its IBM PC
Multimedia Server at Networld + Interop (Booth #s 3557 & 3677). This
powerful multimedia server, based on IBM OS/2, IBM OS/2 LAN Server, IBM
LAN Server Ultimedia and the IBM PC Server, is designed to provide a
multimedia audio/video server solution for a variety of applications and
environments.

This innovative IBM solution is the result of close collaboration among the
IBM PC Server division, the IBM Personal Software Products division and
the multimedia group of IBM Cross-Industry Solutions. The IBM PC
Multimedia Server is a key component of client/server multimedia
applications, providing the capability to distribute and share in real
time, audio and video across local area networks (LANs).

Training and education environments can use the IBM PC Multimedia Server to
implement advanced multimedia-based training programs, incorporating text,
graphics, images, audio and video content. The new server solution gives
organizations the capability to share and distribute audio and video data
for department-specific applications, desktop training and video
conferencing.

Businesses also can use the server for merchandising through public access
kiosks.

"This entire solution makes multimedia implementation simple for the
customer," said Michael Coleman, general manager, IBM PC Servers. "We've
solved the technical issues for customers ahead of time, and we've made
the solution easy to plug into customer environments. For day-to-day ease
of use, the new server is also packaged with NetFinity, a member of IBM's
SystemView family, IBM's advanced management software that makes LAN
management efficient."

"The IBM PC Multimedia Server takes all the guesswork out of buying and
configuring a video or multimedia server," said Phil Powers, director of
LAN systems marketing, IBM Personal Software Products Division. "This
solution will be very appealing to anyone wishing to access shared
multimedia, as well as non-multimedia information. The server is ideal for
multimedia classrooms, language labs, kiosks and more. Right out of the
box, it's ready to serve - just add data."

The IBM PC Multimedia Server configuration has the capability to support 10
simultaneous video streams with superior quality. With additional network
interface cards installed in the PC Multimedia Server, as many as 40
simultaneous multimedia sessions can be operated, supporting an entire
building or company of users. The 1GB of multimedia data storage allows
for approximately 110 minutes of video or several hours of audio depending
on the technology used.

The IBM PC Multimedia Servers are backed by IBM's comprehensive and
industry-leading service and support with three-year, on-site warranty
service and 24-hour, seven day-a-week telephone support through IBM
HelpWare. In addition to HelpWare, customers also can take advantage of
IBM PC Server Start Up Support, a 90-day technical support program, at no
additional cost, designed to take the hassle out of installing and setting
up server hardware components and system software configurations for
customers.

The IBM PC Multimedia Server , an integrated hardware/software package,
initially will be configured with the IBM PS/2 Server 95, equipped with
1GB Fast SCSI-2 Disk (for multimedia data); 60 MHz Pentium processor; 1GB
disk for system programs and applications; an internal SCSI 2X CD-ROM
drive; IBM's NetFinity management software and the IBM Auto LANStreamer MC
32 adapter or IBM Dual EtherStreamer MC 32 adapter. The server comes
pre-loaded with IBM OS/2 2.11, IBM OS/2 LAN Server 4.0 Advanced and IBM
LAN Server Ultimedia 1.0.1. In addition, the IBM PC Multimedia Server can
be easily upgraded to provide for additional storage as multimedia
databases and library data are accumulated.

IBM plans to offer the multimedia server solution on other PC Server
platforms, including the IBM PC Server 300 and IBM PC Server 500. The IBM
PC Multimedia Servers will be sold through IBM PC Direct at
1-800-426-2968. The new servers' general availability will be late spring,
and pricing will be announced at that time.
