IBM Launches New Products for Wireless Networks and High-Performance LANs

SOMERS, N.Y., March 14 . . . IBM today released a volley of new mobile
computing and computer networking announcements designed to accelerate
customers' drive toward the emerging world of network- centric computing,
in which customers benefit from "anytime, anywhere" access to
information.

Wireless computing products announced today provide low-cost solutions in
two vital areas:

o For small networks of "roaming" workers, such as hospital, warehouse,
and retail store personnel -- IBM announced its new computer adapter that
communicates with the new IBM 8227 access terminal -- linking remote users
to an Ethernet network. Nurses can check and report patient data,
inventory clerks can update stock information and machine tool operators
working in temporary quarters can download instructions -- as if they were
physically connected to an existing LAN.

o For wide-ranging users such as insurance agents, executives, repair
technicians and public safety workers, IBM announced three new wireless
laptop computer modems -- IBM Wireless Modem for ARDIS, IBM Wireless Modem
for Mobitex and IBM Wireless Modem for Cellular/CDPD -- that provide fast
access to nationwide data communications services.

ATM, Hub and LAN Enhancements

IBM's first Token-Ring switch was also announced today, the new IBM 8272
LANStreamer switch -- featuring ATM connectivity up to 155 Mbps and a
price tag in the Ethernet range.

IBM also today announced new, low-cost, high performance Asynchronous
Transfer Mode (ATM) products that will help customers implement ATM
networks more cost-effectively than ever before -- without uprooting
productive workgroups or abandoning current Ethernet and Token-Ring
networks.

Maximum throughput for IBM's ATM offerings is being boosted to 155 million
bits per second (Mbps), in addition to the 25 Mbps and 100 Mbps previously
available. New, lower-priced connectors will make ATM networks more
affordable.

These benefits will be provided by the following IBM products and
enhancements:

A new 155 Mbps ATM Concentration Module will permit customers to link their
IBM 8260 intelligent Hubs to ATM high-performance servers, multimedia
workstations, bridges, routers, LAN switches and other 8260s. The new
modules employ economical SC connectors, which customers can use to link
all the fiber-attached ATM elements in their networks.

o A new 100 Mbps ATM module for the IBM 8260 Intelligent Hub that also
uses economical SC connectors will provide the same lower-cost fiber links
available for the 155 Mbps modules. These can significantly lower costs
for larger ATM networks extending up to two kilometers.

o A 155 Mbps ATM uplink connection for the IBM 8271 EtherStreamer switch
and the new IBM 8272 LANStreamer switch for Token-Ring gives customers the
option to connect high-speed ATM networks.

o A new 155 Mbps TURBOWAYS ATM adapter, with PCI bus and AIX support, tops
off current 25 and 100 Mbps versions and furnishes desktop users with
another choice when they decide to install powerful new high-performance
ATM servers and workstations.

o Enhanced function for IBM's economical, entry level 25 Mbps TURBOWAYS
ATM workstation adapter, adds PCI bus support for OS/2 to the previously
available DOS and Micro Channel capabilities.

Four new or enhanced Ethernet switches, routers and hubs were also
announced today as well as upgrades to network management software.
