DIGITAL'S LINKWORKS VERSION 3 OFFERS POWERFUL NEW CAPABILITIES FOR
DEVELOPERS OF CUSTOM BUSINESS SOLUTIONS

MAYNARD, Mass. March 7, 1995 Digital Equipment Corporation today announced
a major new version of its LinkWorks solution framework software. For the
first time, users can take advantage of software component technology that
combines information on the desktop with information from business
applications, data warehouses and document databases.

LinkWorks offers a complete object-oriented environment to build solutions
for critical business processes such as client relations, customer
service, project management and patient care. This information is
maintained in an application's original file format by intelligent
containers. Version 3 also features an improved user interface, expanded
workflow capabilities, simplified system administration, improved
performance, and built-in integration for popular mail applications and
ALL-IN-1 file cabinet access.

The Version 3 development and deployment environment now enables software
developers to build applications using software components, application
programming interfaces, and a scripting language. Software Components
Easily Created, Distributed, and Installed

"With Version 3, the LinkWorks object-oriented engine is opened up to the
developer community," said Dilip Phadke, group marketing manager of
Digital's workgroup integration products. "This openness dramatically
strengthens the capabilities of Digital's business partners to easily
develop and deploy reusable business solutions with the LinkWorks software
component technology."

LinkWorks software components are reusable plug-and-play modules that can
be combined to create custom business solutions which are easily
distributed via CD-ROM or electronic mail and installed simply by dragging
and dropping it onto the LinkWorks desktop.

Application programming interfaces enable developers to extend existing
applications with LinkWorks functionality, or to extend the LinkWorks
framework itself, using tools such as Microsoft Visual BASIC or the C and
C++ programming languages. Industry-standard mechanisms such as DDE
(dynamic data exchange), OLE2 (object linking and embedding) and DLL
(dynamic linked libraries) control interaction between applications and
LinkWorks.

The new scripting language creates custom functionality rapidly by
automatically recording sequences of user actions into scripts, which can
be replayed, edited and shared with other LinkWorks users. The scripting
language creates screen location independent scripts that run on any
LinkWorks platform.

Along with the new development technology included in the LinkWorks
product, Digital also announced a LinkWorks Software Developer Kit
consisting of tutorial and reference documentation, example applications,
extensive online help for the software developer, and customizable source
versions for the online user help.
