NEWBRIDGE INTRODUCES ATM LAN SERVICE UNITS FOR ETHERNET AND TOKEN RING
LANS

PRODUCTS ADDRESS GROWING MARKET FOR HIGH SPEED LAN INTERCONNECTIONS OVER
ATM NETWORKS

KANATA, Ontario, March 13 -- Newbridge Networks, a global leader in
networking, today announced two new products that provide high-speed LAN
interconnection over ATM. The 36030 MainStreet ATMnet Ethernet and the
36050 MainStreet ATMnet Token Ring LAN Service Units (LSUs) answer the
growing demand from service providers and end users alike to provide
LAN-to-WAN connectivity and utilize ATM, the most efficient technology for
handling high-speed LAN interconnection. They join the company's suite of
wide area ATM networking products, the most comprehensive in the
industry.

"The Newbridge LAN service units will be especially important to service
providers as they expand their offerings to provide high-speed LAN
interconnection," said Irfan Ali, Vice President of Product Marketing.
"The dramatic proliferation of both Ethernet and Token Ring LANs
throughout organizations worldwide has created great demand for the kind
of connectivity the LSUs will provide. The interconnection of such
environments across an ATM network is clearly a large opportunity for our
carrier customers and one that the Newbridge LSUs will address very
effectively."

Ali further explained that the LSUs' easy integration into an ATM network
offers service providers immediate new business opportunities. The LSUs
will provide the best price/performance solution available today. The high
density of ports per device makes the LSU cost considerably less per port
than competing products. At the same time, the wire speed performance
assured at each port of the LSU makes it unique in the marketplace.

The LSUs can be integrated into networks based on the Newbridge 36150
MainStreet ATMnet Access Switch or the 36170 MainStreet ATMnet Backbone
Switch to offer native speed LAN interconnection services in a fully
managed solution. Such services will allow end users to operate
applications over the wide area with the same high performance and low
latency as seen in the local area. At the same time, the resulting network
topology will also simplify configuration and maintenance of
enterprise-wide LAN internetworks for both end customers and service
providers.

The LSUs allow service providers to offer a wide range of service
configurations, ranging from a simple point-to-point configuration to a
more complex version supporting multipoint bridged configurations. The
LSUs support transparent spanning tree bridging for Ethernet and source
routing for Token Ring. Both units support SNMP network management and can
be managed with the Newbridge 4602 MainStreet Intelligent NetworkStation
and the 46020 MainStreet Network Manager.

The Ethernet LSU will provide 12 Ethernet ports on the access side and an
OC-3 trunk. Each Ethernet port is capable of supporting wire speed
interconnect and provides an independent, transparent bridging function.
Individual ports from different Ethernet LSUs can be linked together with
permanent virtual circuits (PVCs) to form an emulated Ethernet LAN.

The Ethernet LSU is available in two basic packages: a NEBS compliant
(Network Equipment Building System) redundant DC power package, which can
be collocated with the ATM switch in the central office, and an AC style
package for the customer site. Both packages support single- mode or
multimode fiber OC-3 trunks.

The Token Ring LSU will have 10 Token Ring ports for access and an OC-3
trunk. Each port is capable of providing wire speed interconnect, at 4 or
16 Mbit/s and supports an independent source route bridge. Individual
Token Ring ports from different Token Ring LSUs can be linked together
with PVCs to form an emulated Token Ring. The Token Ring LSU will also be
available in multiple configurations including AC and NEBS compliant DC
power, single-mode or multimode OC-3 trunks.

The 36030 MainStreet ATMnet Ethernet LSU and the 36050 MainStreet Token
Ring LSU will be available this summer. Pricing will be based on specific
configurations, however, typical list price will be in the range of
$20,000.
