COMPUTER MEDIA NAME TOP SOFTWARE PICKS; FOUR LEADING JOURNALISTS HONORED BY
SPA

Lewis, Alsop, Buckleitner, and Raskin Recognized

March 13, 1994 (San Diego, CA) -- The Software Publishers Association (SPA)
presented their Annual Journalism Awards to four leading reporters
representing various aspects of the software industry today. The awards
were presented as part of the SPA's Tenth Annual Codie Awards ceremony and
recognize journalists who define a standard of excellence in their
reporting on the software industry. This year's honorees were:

Peter Lewis, New York Times:
   Best Overall Industry Coverage

Stewart Alsop, PC Letter; InfoWorld:
   Best Financial Reporting & Analysis

Warren Buckleitner, Children's Software Revue:
   Best Software Reviewer

Robin Raskin, Family PC, PC Magazine:
   Best Industry Analyst/Editorial

This year, nominees, finalists, and winners were nominated and selected by
a broad cross-section of veteran software industry journalists. Past
Journalism Award winners have included such highly respected journalists
as Walt Mossberg of The Wall Street Journal, Keith Ferrell of
OMNI/Compute, Johnny Wilson of Computer Gaming World, and Michael Miller
of PC Magazine.

Peter Lewis, columnist for the New York Times, received the award for Best
Overall Industry Coverage. This award honors the individual who best
covers the industry's important issues in a timely and objective manner.
Lewis writes two columns for the New York Times, Personal Computers, and
Ex Machina.

Says Lewis, "I'm a reporter, not an industry expert; the readers are
non-technical and so am I."

Stewart Alsop, Editor-in-Chief of InfoWorld, was named Best Financial
Reporting & Analysis. This award is conferred upon the person who best
covers the business and financial aspects of the industry, including
financial reporting, stock market, or industry trend analysis. Alsop's
"Distributed Thinking" column reports on and analyzes new products, in
addition to investigating future software industry business trends.

The award for Best Software Reviewer was presented to Warren Buckleitner of
the Children's Software Revue. This category honors the journalist who
most consistenly presents accurate, fair, and thorough representations of
software products in their reviews. Classroom teacher turned editor,
Buckleitner's Children's Software Revue covers educational software for
parents and teachers of children from 3 to 12 years of age. Buckleitner
also writes an early education column in HomePC.

Finally, Robin Raskin of FamilyPC and PC Magazine, received the award for
Best Industry Analyst/Editorial. This award honors the person who most
consistently presents insightful and articulate reflections of the
evolution of the microcomputer software industry. As an editor at PC
Magazine, Ms. Raskin is responsible for the day-to-day editorial direction
of the magazine and manages the editorial department. She also writes
"Pipeline," a regular commentary on industry trends.

CRITICS' CHOICE AWARDS

The SPA also announced the winners of its annual Critics' Choice Awards.
The Critics' Choice Awards represent the best new business, consumer, and
education software programs for 1994, as selected by members of the press
who regularly review software. A panel of software industry journalists
conducted two rounds of balloting to make final selections in each of the
three categories. New software programs or new versions of existing
products that were shipped in 1994 qualified for nomination. This year,
the Critics' Choice Awards honored the following:

   America Online
   Best Consumer Software Product

   Microsoft Office Professional 4.3 for Windows/CD-ROM
   Microsoft Corporation
   Best Business Software Product

   The Way Things Work
   Dorling-Kindersley
   Best Education Software Product
