PRONEXUS Announces Object-Oriented Windows Telephony

February 20, 1995 -- PRONEXUS announces TAPISTRY, the first software
development kit to provide object-oriented access from popular development
environments like Visual Basic to the functions available under the
Microsoft. Intel Telephony Application Programming Interface standard
(TAPI). Developers can use TAPISTRY to quickly add any of the TAPI
functions to their applications, including: answering calls; caller-id;
placing calls on hold; transferring calls; conferencing calls controlling
phone set displays, buttons and lamps; dialing numbers; collecting and
generating digits; and more.

TAPI provides a standard Application Programming Interface (API) for
software developers and a standard Service Provider Interface (SPI) for
hardware manufacturers and other telecom service providers. By developing
under TAPI, application developers can take advantage of the many
capabilities and services of the telephone network without the need to
write unique software drivers for each type and make of telecom hardware.
The variety of telecom hardware and network services available to TAPI
developers is very large and includes: voice cards, proprietary phone
sets, PBX's, key switch units, cellular, POTS, and ISDN.

Creating telephony applications under TAPI remains difficult due to the
asynchronous nature of the telephone system (most phone system operations
take time) and the requirement to develop applications in "C" language.
TAPISTRY reduces the time required to develop applications under TAPI by
providing objects that represent all of the components in TAPI: devices,
lines, phones, and calls. These TAPISTRY objects provide properties with
which all of the TAPI functions can be called. The object-oriented
implementation of TAPISTRY significantly simplifies the management of the
links between the application and the asynchronous TAPI functions. It
allows developers to easily associate the TAPI function completion events
with the related controls in their applications.

A primary use, for TAPISTRY is the development of custom desktop telephony
applications to provide onscreen control of personal inbound and outbound
calls via the Windows Graphical User Interface. Developers can use
TAPISTRY to quickly add custom dialing, caller-id, or call handling
capabilities to their database applications, contact management or
personal information management software, or other Windows applications.
Imagine: the phone rings; automatically a Window appears with the name of
the caller; the call can be answered; or, with the click of the mouse, the
call can be put on hold, sent to voice mail, or transferred to another
extension.

For the development of telephony applications under TAPI which focus on
unattended voice processing (such as voice mail, audiotext, interactive
voice response, and fax-on-demand), the TAPI-compliant version of VBVoice,
also by PRONEXUS, makes the job even easier by providing a truly graphical
design interface. VBVoice combines components of TAPI with the voice
processing functions available under the Microsoft Wave API. TAPISTRY and
VBVoice can also be used together to provide a complete Windows voice
processing and telephony software development toolkit.

The 16 bit VBX control version of TAPISTRY is available now with an
introductory price of $295. A 32 bit OCX version of TAPISTRY will be
released in 4Q 1995.

PRONEXUS was founded in 1993 to provide advanced Windows voice processing
and telephony software development tools to developers and end users.
Telephony software tools by PRONEXUS include VBVoice and VBFax, which are
leading voice and fax application toolkits for Visual Basic. A
TAPI-compliant version of VBVoice will be released in Q2, 1995.
