Apple Licenses MacApp and OpenDoc Development Frameworks to Prominent
Macintosh and Windows Tools Vendors

Language Systems, Metrowerks, Novell and Symantec Sign Integration and
Distribution Agreements

SAN JOSE, California--May 8, 1995--Apple Computer, Inc. today disclosed
that four major software development tools companies are licensing Apple's
object-oriented frameworks for integration with their development
environments. According to agreements announced at Apple's Worldwide
Developers Conference, MacApp and the OpenDoc Development Framework (ODF)
will be integrated and distributed with Metrowerks CodeWarrior products
and Symantec C++ for Power Macintosh. Also, Novell disclosed its agreement
to include ODF in future releases of the OpenDoc for Windows Software
Developers Kit (SDK), and Language Systems announced plans to distribute a
native Power Macintosh version of MacApp 2.1 together with its Power
Macintosh Object Pascal compiler.

An application framework is a collection of software libraries with rich
functionality and interconnections that provide an infrastructure for
applications. It operates as a foundation template that defines an
application's basic default behavior (for printing, scroll bars, menus,
and other system-level services). Because frameworks enable a higher level
of code design and reuse than other approaches, they are inherently
quicker and easier to customize. Frameworks-based applications are not
only faster to develop and revise, but are more stable and reliable.

"Professional programmers are rapidly embracing frameworks as a more
efficient, effective approach to software development," said Ike Nassi,
vice president, Apple System Software Technology. "By making Apple
frameworks available as value-added features of leading Macintosh and
Windows programming environments, Apple is providing the increased level
of access and support developers require."

"This agreement enables Object Pascal developers to recover their
investment in MacApp 2.1 and deliver native Power Macintosh solutions in
days rather than months, without converting to C++," said Guy McCarthy,
Language Systems president and CEO.

"We're very happy to be working with Apple to make MacApp and ODF widely
available by supporting these important technologies as part of our
CodeWarrior product line," said Greg Galanos, president and CEO of
Metrowerks, Inc. "We're also extremely happy to provide OpenDoc DR 2 as
part of the developer release CD that Metrowerks is including for all
CodeWarrior 6 customers. Supporting these fundamental technologies early
in the game has always been an engineering objective at Metrowerks."

"ODF gives developers the ability to easily create custom OpenDoc
components on a cross-platform basis," said Bill Kesselring, OpenDoc
Product Manager for Novell. "Developers find it extremely beneficial to
use a tool that allows them to expand into new markets while
simultaneously easing the development process, and ODF does just that."

"By promoting wide distribution of these powerful class libraries, Apple is
demonstrating a clear commitment to supporting professional developers,"
said David Allcott, Macintosh C++ product manager at Symantec. "Using the
OpenDoc Development Framework, developers will be able to more easily
create reliable applications for Macintosh and Windows operating
systems."

Apple Frameworks

Considered the first and most complete standard by which frameworks are
measured, MacApp is Apple's object-oriented C++ framework for developing
stand-alone Macintosh applications. MacApp offers numerous features to
help developers organize, manage, test, secure and enhance code throughout
the development process.

Apple's newest C++ object-oriented framework, ODF, is designed specifically
to help developers easily build OpenDoc component software for deployment
across heterogeneous computing environments (currently Macintosh and
Windows). OpenDoc software components are the foundation upon which
Apple's OpenDoc cross- platform software architecture is based. These
reusable, compatible building blocks are designed to work seamlessly with
applications from different vendors.

On top of OpenDoc, ODF provides a set of services to simplify development
of OpenDoc components and enables programmers to build components for use
on multiple platforms. ODF's modular design also makes it possible for
developers to use only the parts of ODF an application needs, resulting in
improved application performance and reduced file size.

ODF offers full support for OpenDoc and compatibility with Microsoft Object
Linking and Embedding (OLE) 2.0. Because ODF uses the underlying
application programming interface to implement the look and feel of a
particular platform, any applications built with ODF appear native on that
platform.

Availability

Support for Apple's development frameworks by Language Systems, Metrowerks,
Novell and Symantec is expected to be available in new releases of each
company's respective tools products.
