WESTMINSTER (UK) CABLE SIGNS CONTRACT WITH DIGITAL TO PROVIDE TECHNOLOGY
FOR VIDEO-ON-DEMAND TRIAL WITH CABLE TV CUSTOMERS

First Truly Interactive Trial in London

MAYNARD, Mass. -- May 5, 1995 -- Digital Equipment Corporation today
announced that Westminster Cable, a London cable TV operator in the
Borough of Westminster franchise, is implementing Digital Equipment
Corporation's Mediaplex media server technology to provide a complete
solution for a video-on-demand trial involving 100 customers initially and
expanding to 1000.

The contract includes provisions for Digital's Mediaplex video server
technology and systems integration expertise.

The beta trial will run from November 1995 to March 1996, and will
ultimately enable customers to choose from a constantly-updated video
library of 200 titles. British Telecom-owned Westminster Cable is the
first to offer a truly interactive video-on-demand system in London.
Because Westminster's cable network is constructed using switched-star
technology, the return path provides a degree of interactivity unmatched
by the traditional cable TV networks currently under construction.

David Lethbridge, sales and marketing director at Westminster Cable,
stated, "We are delighted to be working with Digital on this trial. The
company has unparalleled experience in this field, demonstrated by the
fact that the Mediaplex platform has already been selected by many cable
and TV companies worldwide. The server's ease of operation and direct
compatibility with our billing and management information systems is a
major plus."

Lethbridge added, "Westminster Cable has taken the lead in UK's cable TV
industry with this move. True video-on-demand, the ability to see what you
want, when you want it, provides the ultimate in customer choice. It will
enable us to meet more closely the needs of the world's most culturally
diverse cable TV franchise, in that it will give customers a real choice
in their viewing."

"Digital's and Westminster Cable's market-leading trial reinforces the
growing worldwide interest in Digital's Mediaplex architecture," said
Jacques Setton, Marketing Manager Europe of Digital's Video and
Interactive Information Services. "We are committed to providing the
industry's most advanced capabilities at a low cost-per-stream."

Digital's video server technology, now sold using the company's Mediaplex
trademark, has already been selected by more cable and telephone companies
worldwide than any other media server provider. The Mediaplex architecture
provides a full-service solution for delivering interactive video
applications over many types of networks. Digital's platform features
object-oriented middleware that links the world's fastest server systems
-- based on 64-bit Alpha processors -- with the company's StorageWorks
disk arrays and digital tape library systems.

The Mediaplex architecture also provides network, subscriber and billing
management capabilities, including full compatibility with existing
tools.

Established in 1983, Westminster Cable is a wholly-owned subsidiary of
British Telecommunications plc. BT also has cable TV interests throughout
the United Kingdom. Westminster Cable offers viewers with the London
Borough of Westminster a wide range of TV channels as well as the Reuters
1000 business information service via PC. It was the first cable TV
company in the UK to offer such a comprehensive business information
package.

Digital Equipment Corporation is the world's leader in open client/server
solutions from personal computing to integrated worldwide information
systems. Digital's scalable Alpha platforms, storage, networking, software
and services, together with industry focused solutions from business
partners, help organizations compete and win in today's global
marketplace.
