DIGITAL STRENGTHENS LEADERSHIP IN $439 MILLION LINE MATRIX PRINTER MARKET

Announces LGO4plus Printer with Highest Reliability and Price/Performance,
and the Powerful Multiprotocol RapidPrint 200 Interface

MAYNARD, Mass. -- May 1, 1995 -- Digital Equipment Corporation today
announced the LGO4plus line printer, a 467 lpm (line per minute) printer
featuring the highest quality output and lowest cost-per- page in its
class. Designed for heavy duty environments such as manufacturing,
warehousing and distribution, the LGO4plus line matrix printer has
unsurpassed reliability with a duty cycle, more than four times that of
any competitor's product. The line printer also provides leading network
connectivity, offering ANSI, Proprinter, Epson, Printronix P Series and
optional PGL or VGL to provide support for Alpha, PC and multi-user UNIX
environments.

Digital also announced the easy-to-install RapidPrint 200 Ethernet printer
interface, a powerful multiprotocol interface that is capable of
supporting up to printers. The RapidPrint 200 interface supports all types
of parallel interfaces and bi-directional communication modes, allowing
existing printer to be used to their fullest capabilities. It supports
Centronics, Dataproducts, Bi-Tronics and IEEE 1284 parallel modes,
providing flexibility, compatibility and investment protection. The
RapidPrint 200 interface is supported by all Digital desktop and network
printers, including the LGO4plus printer, as well as printers featuring
serial and parallel ports.

"Digital is committed to leveraging its technical expertise in the
manufacture of cost-effective, high-quality, open printing solutions that
meet the rapidly expanding needs of network users," said Jeb Hurley,
director of marketing and business operations for Digital's Printer Line
of Business. "With an unlimited duty cycle and connections to most any
network, the LGO4plus printer is ideal for mission critical tasks, such as
printing invoices and payroll documents."

"The RapidPrint 200 interface extends the access of high duty-cycle
printers like the LGO4plus line printer, to every user on networks
supporting PC and Macintosh computers, UNIX, ULTRIX or VMS workstations,
VT and VXT terminals, or a combination of all of them," said Bill Mello,
marketing manager, Digital's Hub Business Group. "With its ability to
operate in UNIX, ULTRIX, OpenVMS and Alpha environments, the RapidPrint
200 interface is another example of Digital's expanding capabilities in
open computing."

LGO4plus Line Matrix Printer -- Unsurpassed Price/Performance

Lowest cost of ownership in its class, quality output, durability and ease
of maintenance combine to provide the LGO4plus printer with the best
price/performance in its class. For users who print both text and
graphics, the LGO4plus printer provides an economical alternative to laser
printers at about one-fifth the cost per page. The all steel-constructed
LGO4plus printer is capable of printing quality output around the clock,
with minimal power consumption.

Targeted at applications such as invoices, statements, checks and bar code
labels, the LGO4plus line printer is the first line matrix printer has the
flexibility to handle a multitude of tasks. And, whether large character,
graphics or traditional text, the printer delivers the highest quality
output. In addition, the design of the LGO4plus printer allows for easy
accessibility to items, such as paper and ribbons, simplifying maintenance
tasks.

"Pioneer Standard is impressed by how neatly the LGO4plus printer manages
our green bar paper supply and how quietly it prints," explained Laura
Falasco, cost control analyst, Pioneer Standard Electronics, a distributor
of electronics and test site for the LGO4plus printer. "We're considering
the purchase of this unit as a permanent fixture in the Cost Control
Department."

RapidPrint 200 Ethernet Printer Interface -- Enhancing Connectivity

The easy to install RapidPrint 200 interface, designed to be placed in any
convenient location near the printer, provides direct access to AppleTalk,
Novell NetWare, TCP/IP and LAT networks. It supports 50Kbytes/sec to the
printer, approximately five times faster than existing network print
server devices. In addition, the RapidPrint 200 interface operates at up
to 115.2K baud and is equipped with its own power supply, connection
cables, fastener kit, and utility diskette containing OpenVMS set-up
program and on-line documentation.
