First New Software to Combine Networked Remote Control and Shiva Remote
Node to Provide Anytime/Anywhere Access

Farallon Introduces Timbuktu Pro for Windows

ALAMEDA, Calif., May 8, 1995 -- Farallon Computing, Inc., a leading
provider of innovative networking software and hardware, today announced
the availability of Timbuktu Pro for Windows--the first software that
combines networked remote control and ShivaPPP remote node technologies to
provide total LAN access for both remote and local users. Optimized for
the Windows PC-network environment, Timbuktu Pro for Windows integrates
high performance networked remote control and Shiva Corporation's
standards-based remote node technologies across LANs, WANs and the
Internet. Consequently, it provides Windows end users with total access to
network services to work more productively together and individually
whether in the office or on the road. Further, it gives network managers
the tools for remote user support and training.

As the number of LANs, WANs and mobile users increases, the need for
services that enable total access to corporate network resources becomes
essential. Timbuktu Pro answers the needs of today's networked users by
providing total access for both Windows PC and Macintosh computers.
Farallon has partnered with Shiva, a leader in remote node technology, to
offer Windows customers the first standards-based (ShivaPPP) remote node
solution with integrated networked remote control. Whether on the LAN or
on the road, Timbuktu Pro for Windows offers network or ShivaPPP dial-in
capabilities, providing access to network resources and enabling users to
work collaboratively in real time, at any moment, from any location.
Timbuktu Pro will be Windows 95 compatible and has been thoroughly tested
to meet the demands of today's Windows end users and MIS support staff.
The product's high performance features reflect feedback from among
Farallon's installed customer base of ova five million nodes.

"Farallon is empowering users with strategic information by enabling access
to the network no matter where they are," said Alan Lefkof, president and
CEO of Farallon. 'The increased popularity of the Internet and other
on-line services means that anytime, anywhere access is more in demand
than ever. At Farallon, we are continuing to provide innovative networking
solutions and are excited that Timbuktu Pro will enable our customers to
connect their remote offices and mobile workforce to corporate network
resources."

"Timbuktu Pro for Windows further demonstrates our commitment to the
Windows PC networking environment," added Farallon's Steven Bauman, vice
president and general manager, software products.

Strategic Partnership with Shiva

As part of its strategic alliance with Shiva, Farallon is incorporating the
company's standards-based (ShivaPPP) client software into Timbuktu Pro for
Windows to offer total network access via modem. By selecting Timbuktu
Pro, users receive two leading technologies--standards-based remote node
and networked remote control--in one product. Now users have a complete
and flexible solution for total access to network resources, such as
files, databases, email and software applications.

"In the same manner that client/server applications changed the way users
look at personal computing, networked remote control software will
redefine the ways users can take advantage of the computing power of the
network," said Angelo Santinelli, senior director of marketing, Shiva "By
supplying users with both networked remote control and Shiva's remote node
technology in one package, Farallon has provided users with the right high
performance tools to effectively communicate and collaborate with remote
colleagues."

With Shiva's PPP client software built in, remote users are able to dial in
and receive high performance communications capabilities between PCs and
their LANs. Support of standard dial-in PPP connections means customers
can use whatever standards-based dial-in server they already have to run
Timbuktu Pro for Windows, such as Microsoft NT 3.5 Remote Access Server or
Windows 95. Further, customers can gain greater scalability and
flexibility when dialing into a Shiva LanRover.

According to David Strom, networking columnist, consultant and president of
David Strom Inc., "Timbuktu Pro has two real advantages that I really
like: first, it comes with Shiva's dial-up PPP client which provides true
remote access to the network. Secondly, it is cross-platform and
multi-protocol, both a must for today's complex networks. Timbuktu Pro for
Windows is clearly the next generation of software when it comes to
providing remote access to network resources."

Timbuktu Pro for Windows Simplifies Total LAN Access and Collaboration

Timbuktu Pro for Windows' superior networked remote control capabilities
offer the fastest access to "LAN-locked" applications such as flat file
databases, which typically require large amounts of data to be transferred
over the network before any specific information can be located by the
remote user. Using Timbuktu Pro's networked remote control feature, users
can query for the data they need from a "LAN-locked" application without
pulling the entire database over slower dial-in links.

File transfer and exchange over a LAN or WAN can be a time-consuming,
multi-step process between the users and the server. Timbuktu Pro replaces
this process with a fast one-step peer-to-peer transfer over standard
protocols.

Among its numerous applications, Timbuktu Pro allows PC and Macintosh users
to collaborate on projects in real time over the LAN or around the world.
Collaborating with Timbuktu Pro saves time and money by reducing travel
between co-worker sites and increases productivity by simply joining
corporate workers over their own LAN.

The Real-time Help Desk and Just-In-time Training

It is increasingly important that users at corporate offices, branch
offices or on the road receive real-time support. In one of its more
popular applications--the real-time help desk--Timbuktu Pro allows MIS
administrators to troubleshoot, resolve problems, load new programs,
assist individual users with computing applications and manage other
important help-desk responsibilities, in real time, without unnecessary
travel expenses. This is possible because Timbuktu Pro enables network
administrators to remotely control any Windows PC or Macintosh on the LAN
or WAN. Another benefit is that users connecting to the network via
Timbuktu PRO's dial-in capabilities obtain the same level of support as if
they were on the LAN.

MIS administrators are finding it difficult to support an increasingly
mobile and diverse workforce. With Timbuktu Pro, they can provide hands-on
"just-in-time" training to users via networked remote control.

According to a report by Gartner Group on remote access solutions, "mobile
workers are frequently time sensitive and require fast turnaround on their
help calls." The report further states that "the problems of delivering
training are exacerbated by the fact that the mobile computing population
is often geographically dispersed."

Extensive Features

* Multiprotocol and Multiplatform Support--Timbuktu Pro supports Windows
Sockets v1.1-based TCP/IP protocols and NetWare. It is the first product
to offer communication between Windows and Macintosh environments over
TCP/IP links. Compatibility with TCP/IP enables networked remote control
and file transfer services over LANs, WANs and the Internet.

* Multitasking--Computers are not limited to performing one activity at a
time. For example, files can be transferred from one computer to another
in the background, while the user works on a presentation in real-time
with yet another computer.

* Easy Installation--Timbuktu Pro needs only to be loaded once and it runs
unobtrusively in the background, allowing both the guest and host services
to always be available. Other remote LAN access applications are
configured to run only when users pre-arrange the connection with each
other, select a protocol or arrange to be either a host or a guest.

* Multi-level Security--Its modular design allows network administrators to
determine the access capabilities of each individual user and an optional
password feature protects against unauthorized access of any computer on
the network.

* Non-intrusive--Timbuktu Pro does not replace video, keyboard or mouse
drivers, nor does it modify any Windows system files such as System.INI or
WIN.INI. As a result, users do not require identical computer
configurations to work together.

* No TSR Required--Timbuktu Pro is a true Windows application and it does
not require a TSR to be loaded before running Windows. Therefore, it does
not occupy lower DOS memory.

* High Performance Remote Node--- ShivaPPP supports LAN access to Novell
NetWare, UNIX hosts, Microsoft LAN Manager, and IBM LAN Server.

"Timbuktu Pro is unique in that it doesn't modify .INI files, replace
keyboard and screen drivers, and move other Windows furniture around the
house, which is great in large corporations, especially where users might
otherwise start deleting files or doing other random acts of violence on
their machines," said Strom.
