IBM Announces New ThinkPad Notebooks

"See-Through-Screen" Projects New Level of Innovation

SOMERS, N.Y., May 9 . . . IBM today added a pair of new models to its
award-winning line of ThinkPad notebooks. One of the new computers
features a cleverly designed screen that allows it to join forces with a
very common piece of office equipment -- the overhead projector.

A snap-off screen panel gives the new ThinkPad 755CV the ability to
"piggyback" atop many types of standard overhead projectors. Remove the
rear panel and the images on the computer's screen become a see-through
"slide show" projected on a wall or screen by the overhead's lamp. The
contents of any software program or presentation can easily be shared with
a group of people.

An infrared remote control with 22 special effects such as zoom, magnify
and spotlight, and powerful built-in telephony features help the ThinkPad
755CV set a new definition of functionality for people who need to travel
light but still pack a powerful and persuasive presentation.

755CX Offers SVGA, lithium-ion, Pentium

The new ThinkPad 755CX is a premier portable equipped with the latest
mobile offerings: Pentium processor (75mhz); lithium-ion battery and a
super-clear SVGA screen capable of displaying 65,536 crisp colors in
800x600 resolution.

Both the ThinkPad 755CX and 755CV offer such ThinkPad exclusives as
built-in speakerphones and answering machines as well as high-speed
infrared connectivity. ThinkPad's smartly engineered modularity makes for
easy switching between components. IBM's SelectaSystem gives users a
choice of operating systems with its dual preload of OS/2 Warp and Windows
3.11. Both models feature TrackPoint III, IBM's widely acclaimed
mouse-replacer that has spawned of host of imitators.

"These are two of the most powerful ThinkPads we've ever built," said Per
Larsen, director worldwide brand management for ThinkPad.

"The 755CV gives customers yet another method of sharing information. We've
eliminated the need to carry along the bulky and expensive panels that
used to be required to marry computer presentations with overhead
projectors. And in doing so, we've made it easier and more economical for
users to communicate."

Developed by the IBM Research Division in Almaden, Calif., the new screen
technology is the latest example of how IBM is quickly moving innovation
from its laboratories and into the hands of its customers.

The ThinkPad 755CX and 755CV are backed by IBM HelpWare, one of the most
comprehensive service plans in the industry. Standard HelpWare offerings
for the 755CV and 755CX include three-year warranty,(1) and International
Warranty Service (registration required), honored wherever IBM and IBM
remarketers sell or service IBM PC products, currently in more than 120
countries. Additionally, ThinkPad EasyServ -- a send-in repair service --
is available at no additional charge during the warranty period in the
U.S., Mexico and Canada.

All ThinkPad owners are also covered by IBM Online Housecall, a HelpWare
offering that enables IBM HelpCenter technicians to remotely diagnose and
often perform ThinkPad repairs via modem.

The IBM HelpCenter is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week
(excluding certain holidays) via toll-free phone number (during the
