IBM Announces ITV Application Development Lab

ATLANTA, May 8, 1995...IBM today announced the establishment of an
interactive television (ITV) development laboratory for creating
applications and media for Microware Corporation's DAVID operating system
environment. The announcement was made in conjunction with the
introduction of the IBM Interactive Media development center in Atlanta.

The lab provides a new capability to customers who are interested in DAVID
application solutions, through a full-service resource with experience in
consulting, design, media creation and programming.

DAVID (Digital Audio/Video Interactive Decoder) is a standard operating
system environment for ITV decoders that can be used in telephone, cable
TV and wireless networks. Created and licensed by Microware, DAVID is
based on Microware's OS-9 Real-Time Operating System, and supports both
networked and local interactive applications, graphics and user
interfaces.

"We are very pleased to see IBM's commitment to DAVID development," said
Steve Johnson, Microware vice president of new media. "We feel this is a
significant milestone for both IBM and Microware, as this DAVID
Developer's lab represents the establishment of an important development
resource and takes advantage of IBM's skills in interactive media creation
and programming and Microware's widely accepted DAVID technology."

More than 20 manufacturers -- including General Instrument, Stellar One,
Philips, Zenith, Compression Labs Inc., Samsung, Mitsubishi and Goldstar
-- have adopted the DAVID platform for use in decoder products that will
be used in trials and network developments throughout 1995.

The DAVID Developer's lab will be part of the IBM Interactive Media
development center. IBM Interactive Media is an full-service content
development organization which blends creative graphic and video artists
with talented interactive media programmers and developers.

"IBM Interactive Media is committed to establishing development
capabilities for the leading ITV platforms -- and Microware's DAVID is
clearly being established as one of the leaders," said Bruce Culbert,
business unit executive for IBM Interactive Media. "By offering content
owners and multimedia developers this new resource for application
development they can begin to experiment with interactive television on a
scale that is affordable and manageable."
