Imagen Communications of Vancouver has announced the release of its RTC
technology for online publications. RTC (Rich Text Compressed) compresses
standard RTF documents, which can be generated from most operating
systems. The technology cites many advantages over competitors such as
Adobe Acrobat and Wordperfect Envoy when used for online publications.

Dwight Jones of Imagen points out that RTC files are smaller than any
competitor's, are the only format based on a file standard such as RTF,
and are more readable, editable, searchable and convertible (back to RTF)
than rival formats. The format has great promise for binary fax and
wireless documents due to its compactness. The Imagen viewer is currently
20% the size of Acrobat.

Imagen's policy is that " We do not concern ourselves with postscript and
fancy fonts. We utilize the standard fonts on every machine, and the
results are uniform and predictable. And you can get the RTF file back
after transmission, which is a powerful feature for WAIS and text
databases."

Jones points out that RTC permits a true magazine interface, with multiple
columns, images, fonts, point sizes etc. on every page. Documents are made
up in major word processors, and HTML syntax is supported. Documents may
be displayed on the WEB or on a BBS unchanged.

"The online industry seems transfixed with interfaces, which is
understandable, but what's being displayed inside those Windows? If it's
just more text, the public will quickly become bored again." says Jones."
The whole problem has been that documents do not accept compressed image
formats like JPEG. Imagen's RTC documents do, so we have a way to expand
the look of documents on a WEB or BBS to full slick magazine status. Sound
is also supported within the forthcoming Win95 code, to be released as an
object."

Both compression and viewing utilities are available as shareware, and no
other file format distributes compression freely. Server pricing is at
$590US, with special pricing during the beta period at $99. The code is
demonstrated and available via FTP at www.imagen.net (or via BBS at
604.687-1030)
