NEW INSTRUMENT DRIVER DLLS SIMPLIFY INSTRUMENT CONTROL FOR VISUAL BASIC AND
C USERS

Austin, TX - April 3, 1995 - National Instruments - The Virtual
Instrumentation Company - has announced a new stand-alone library of
instrument drivers that significantly reduces the development time of GPIB
test systems for users of Visual Basic, Visual C++, or any Windows
development environment. The Instrument Driver DLL Library is a collection
of more than 75 instrument drivers - developed using the company's
LabWindows/CVI visual programming environment converted to custom dynamic
link libraries (DLLs) - for controlling the most popular GPIB test
instruments from Tektronix, Hewlett-Packard, Wavetek, Fluke, and other
leading instrument suppliers. The entire instrument driver library of more
than 75 DLLs and its accompanying documentation are delivered on CD-ROM.

High-Level Instrument Control

An instrument driver is a high-level library of functions for controlling a
particular instrument. Instead of searching through instrument programming
reference manuals for cryptic command strings for controlling a device
over the GPIB, users with an instrument driver can use intuitive
functions, such as Initialize(), Configure(), or Measure(), to control
their instruments. The instrument driver acts as a high-level translator
between the user and the instruments - automatically building the
appropriate command string for the chosen operation, sending the command
over the GPIB, receiving the results from the device, and parsing and
scaling the returned data for the user. Each instrument driver DLL
includes a Windows help file that documents its functions, along with the
required header files for using the DLL within Visual Basic or C
programming environments under Windows.

Drivers Based on a Leading Instrument Control Software

The Instrument Driver DLL Library is built from source code originating
from the LabWindows/CVI Instrument Driver Library, an extensive
multivendor instrument driver library in the industry - the same
instrument driver technology recently endorsed by the VXIplug&play Systems
Alliance. Users of the Windows Instrument Driver DLL Library will benefit
from the years of development and customer feedback built into the drivers
from the LabWindows/CVI Instrument Driver Library.
