UNIXWARE 2 DELIVERS OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE IN AIM BENCHMARK TESTS

Offers industry-leading price and absolute performance across a broad
spectrum of high-volume systems

San Jose, CA--May 4, 1995-- Novell, Inc. today announced UnixWare 2 earned
industry-leading price and absolute performance measurements for
Intel-based high-volume systems on benchmark tests conducted by AIM
Technology, a leading independent performance testing service for UNIX
Systems, and published in its Summer 1995 UNIX System Price Performance
Guide. These leadership test results were obtained with the UnixWare 2
Application Server operating system running on systems from four leading
hardware partners: Compaq Computer Corp., Corollary, Inc., ICL and Tricord
Systems, Inc. UnixWare 2 earned exceptional results in three of AIM's most
popular benchmarks: the AIM Standard Mix, Suite III; the AIM Workstation,
Suite VI; and the AIM Multi-User, Suite VII.

These leading AIM benchmark results prove UnixWare 2, the first application
server designed to bring business-critical computing to Novell networks,
can win in the enterprise space when paired with high-volume hardware.
"With UnixWare 2, customers gain industry-leading absolute performance and
scalability among high-volume systems from small single CPU servers to
large SMP systems, and an easy to use and install application server
operating system that is not locked into a proprietary hardware solution,"
said Rick Bohdanowicz, vice president of marketing for Novell's UNIX
Systems Group. "So now customers can deploy UnixWare 2 on a wide range of
systems throughout their enterprise, with the assurance that they're
getting the best price performance value," he added. Superior price
performance value has been a key attribute of UnixWare since its first
release, and the story continues even more dramatically with this
version.

In the AIM Standard Mix, Suite III, which tests the total system
performance of all major system components in a multi-tasking environment,
UnixWare 2 captured the top two scores in the Best Sustained Performance
category in the $50K to $100K class, running on four processor SMP Compaq
ProLiant 4000 and Corollary CB II/4000 systems, respectively. In the same
price categories, UnixWare 2 also held the top two leading positions in
Best Peak Performance, running on the same two high-volume systems. In
addition, UnixWare 2, running on a Fujitsu-ICL teamserver H530i, achieved
the best absolute result on a single processor Intel Pentium system.

In the AIM Suite VI, which measures typical workstation usage, UnixWare 2
earned the top scores in two categories -- General Business Mix and
Imaging and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Mix -- both while running
on a Compaq Prosignia 300 -- proving UnixWare 2 combined with standard
high-volume hardware can successfully compete with more expensive RISC
alternatives. Also with this suite, and again running on a Compaq
Prosignia 300, UnixWare 2 claimed best price and performance in the
mechanical CAD/Numeric Analysis Mix which models an environment comprising
a large design database loaded into memory and manipulated numerically.

UnixWare 2 also was the clear leader in the AIM Suite VII File Server Mix
ratings that measure the demands on a system used as a centralized file
server, including I/O and other computing services. In the Best
Price/Sustained Performance category, UnixWare 2 was number one in both
the under $50K and over $50K classes, running on a Compaq Prosignia 300
and Compaq ProLiant 4000, respectively. The Compaq ProLiant 4000 with
UnixWare 2 also garnered the top spot in Best Sustained Performance in the
over $50K category. When the Tricord ES3000/5100 (2 CPU) results are
included, UnixWare 2 obtained the top three out of four Best Sustained
Performance in the over $50K category.

Additionally, in the AIM Suite VII Multiuser/Shared System Mix Best
Price/Sustained Performance category, $25K to $50K class, UnixWare 2,
running on a Fujitsu-IC teamserver H532i, turned in the fastest dual
processor system result to date. This clearly demonstrates the enterprise
strength of UnixWare 2.

UnixWare 2's industry-leading price and performance results on high-volume
systems will be of particular interest to customers downsizing their
business-critical applications from their mainframe environments.Novell,
in concert with key industry partners, will continue providing customers
with a clear path to pervasive computing by relying on its technological
strengths, its ability to partner with leaders in the industry, and its
dedicated support services.

of computing solutions. UnixWare is a powerful, cost-effective UNIX
operating system that runs on industry-standard hardware, ideal for
deploying business-critical and database applications across the
enterprise. It represents the newest generation of UNIX System V Release 4
technology, originally developed by UNIX System Laboratories.By combining
unmatched applications availability, price/performance, scalability and
network readiness, UnixWare provides an application server businesses can
trust.
