PC Products Database Continues Growing With No Slowing in Sight!

Now Lists Over 70,500 Products From Over 24,300 Companies/Authors
-- Reminder: Weekly Newswire Available For BBS Distribution --

May 27, 1995 -- The June release of the PC Products Database from Baker
Enterprises will include information on over 70,300 products from over
24,300 companies/authors from throughout the PC industry. The entire
database will be available in several formats from EMS Professional
Software (EMS) or online via America Online (AOL). The database includes
all companies/authors offering products and/or services to the PC
marketplace, including: software (commercial and shareware, systems,
expansion hardware, peripherals, accessories, services, organizations,
books/videos & other publications, plus much, much more.

For each company, the database lists complete mailing addresses, phone
numbers (voice, fax, 800#, BBS, etc.), Email addresses and/or Internet
ftp/gopher/www pointers. Product information is limited to a 60 character
field for the company name and whatever brief description or keywords will
fit. The database is designed to be a yellow pages of the industry,
providing a quick and easy way to find who-makes-what and where to contact
them for more information on a particular product. It does not attempt to
provide detailed product descriptions, pricing information, etc. due to
the wide scope of products and services covered.

EMS provides their PC Products Database as a dBase version of the data
compressed on floppy disk, complete with their customized search engine
and user interface. This package provides everything needed to search by
company/author name or product name. The total database, complete with
product indexing information, includes over 215,000 records of information
currently. The floppy based dBase version sells for only $25 plus $5
shipping & handling supplied on three high density floppy diskettes that
expand to over 30MB of disk space when installed. This version is updated
bi-monthly and is available in various subscription packages at reduced
prices for those that need to stay up to date. See below for contact
information for EMS.

EMS also provides the same dBase package along with a more comprehensive
WinHelp version and a universal ASCII text copy on CD-ROM. The WinHelp
version is a five file package that is over 80MB in size and allows
additional searching by product type from 700 product categories. This
version also allows you to add your own annotations and bookmarks, see a
list of all companies that produce a particular product type, and more.
The ASCII text file is approximately 10MB in size and allows users of
non-PC based machines to access the basic information using standard grep
or similar text search utilities. Check with EMS for availability and
current pricing of the CD-ROM version. The next CDs should be ready in
early June and will include our past news archive files as an added
bonus.

The online database that appears on AOL as the PC Vendors Database (keyword
= Vendors) is organized as separate text articles per company, providing
current mailing addresses, phone numbers, Email address and/or Internet
ftp/gopher/www points, plus complete product list. The information is
searchable by company, author and product name as well as various keyword
references. Note that the data currently available on AOL is not up to
date, but we hope to have this corrected in the next few weeks. AOL has
not been able to update the database for several months, but we've been
working with them to rebuild the entire area and give us the ability to
directly update the data ourselves as needed. If all goes well, the latest
data will be online shortly, with the latest search capabilities as well.
