SYBASE ANNOUNCES NEW APPLICATION SUPPORT DIVISION

Division Dedicated to Optimizing Third-Party Applications for SYBASE
Architecture

EMERYVILLE, CA, May 9, 1995 -- Sybase Inc., The Enterprise Client/Server
Company, today announced the Sybase Application Support Division (ASD), a
new division dedicated to optimizing third-party client/server
applications for the SYBASE architecture, including its database, tools,
and interoperability products. ASD is committed to improving the
implementation of client/server applications by strategically investing
engineering and consulting resources to support Sybase application
partners. ASD will enable Sybase Open Solutions partner applications to be
delivered to market sooner and be better integrated with existing customer
applications. In addition, partners will be able to more quickly develop
their applications to support new versions of SYBASE software.

"Sybase's strategy is to deliver best-of-breed client/server solutions
through strategic partnerships with industry-leading application vendors,"
said Mark Hoffman, chairman, CEO, and president of Sybase. "With the
formation of the Application Support Division, Sybase's solutions partners
can further optimize their applications for the openness and flexibility
of the SYBASE architecture by utilizing committed engineering and
professional services resources. Sybase and its partners provide customers
with client/server solutions that meet their critical business
requirements now and in the future."

ASD offers services to Sybase partners on a project-oriented basis.
Specifically, it provides assistance in application design and development
for the SYBASE architecture; application performance and tuning;
interoperability with applications, SYBASE, and other industry products;
and configuration management. In addition, ASD has created a new Sybase
Open Solutions Lab, located in Emeryville, CA, which is an engineering lab
dedicated to partner applications. More than a porting center, this lab is
designed to facilitate application performance tuning, integration
services, and optimization for the SYBASE database.

ASD complements the Sybase channel and partner marketing efforts currently
in place. Sybase's Open Solutions Program has more than 2,000 partners
worldwide, including vertical and horizontal application providers, ISVs,
and systems integrators. The Open Solutions model provides customers with
the flexibility to choose best-of-breed client/server solutions that meet
their current and future business requirements.

"Over the past two years, Sybase has demonstrated a solid commitment in
helping its partners succeed in the highly competitive client/server
marketplace," said David Sohm, vice president of channels and partner
marketing for Sybase. "Investments in dedicated engineering and consulting
resources further enhance Sybase's existing partner support programs and
enable the delivery of more integrated, optimized applications for
customers."

Partners Pleased With Expanded Services

The ASD currently has several projects underway to help partners enhance
their applications for the Sybase architecture and reduce the
time-to-market. With ASD resources, Sybase's partners receive support that
Sybase believes to extend beyond the typical elements of competitive
partner programs.

Client/server application developers such as Dun & Bradstreet Software are
working with ASD to ensure their applications will be fully compliant with
System 11 concurrent with its general availability later this
year--eliminating any lapse in support for new product versions. Dun &
Bradstreet Software's accounting and decision support applications
currently ship on SYBASE System 10.

"The Application Support Division is proud to be teaming up with
application software providers that have captured market leadership,
demonstrated their commitment to leading edge technologies, and are
dedicated to shipping their products on SYBASE," said Mike Regan, vice
president and general manager of Application Support Division at Sybase.
"Working closely together, Sybase and its key application partners will
deliver superior client/server solutions to customers quickly and
effectively."

Many leading application providers have chosen Sybase as a strategic
client/server partner. The addition of ASD services will better enable
these companies to leverage the comprehensive SYBASE architecture.

Hyperion Software, the third-ranking market share leader in the accounting
applications market, has chosen SYBASE as the first database to support
with its newest client/server accounting solution. "Hyperion Software's
collaboration with Sybase has been extremely productive and beneficial to
the launch of Hyperion Financials," said James A. Perakis, president and
CEO of Hyperion Software. "Together, the companies are able to deliver
next-generation client/server solutions that address our customers'
business and technology requirements."

Lawson Software specializes in enterprise-wide accounting, human resources,
distribution, and materials management software and has teamed with Sybase
to deliver integrated client/server solutions to customers. "The Sybase
Application Support program reflects a vision of customer service that is
shared by Lawson," said Dan Metzger, vice president of marketing for
Lawson. "Lawson's philosophy is likewise based on best-of-breed solutions
that involve collaborative relationships with leading firms. Both Sybase
and Lawson recognize that alliances between best-of-breed providers help
everyone focus on a complete solution to address the customers' needs."

Customers Realize the Benefits of Successful Partnerships

Joint customers support Sybase's open solutions approach and will benefit
in the future from Sybase's enhanced partner services. For example, United
Grain Growers is a Dun & Bradstreet Software and Sybase customer that has
realized the benefits of a successful partnership.

specific to our corporate-wide financial computing needs," said Keith
Minaker, corporate comptroller of United Grain Growers, a more than one
billion Canadian dollar agricultural conglomerate. "The combination of
Sybase's open and flexible architecture and Dun & Bradstreet Software's
feature-rich applications met our accounting business requirements. With
SYBASE as our database corporate standard running Dun & Bradstreet
Software's SmartStream financial applications, our client/server
environment is optimized for the many United Grain Grower employees
involved in the company's accounting activities."

Scopus is the market leader in enterprise-wide, client/server customer
information systems which include customer support, sales automation, and
product quality applications. Scopus and Sybase work together in providing
best-of-breed solutions for enterprise-class customers.

management system which provides support for our full-text database which
is the largest in the world," said Mike Knelliger, senior director
information systems, LEXIS-NEXIS. "We strongly support the Sybase strategy
of choosing best-breed-breed applications such as Scopus in the customer
information management arena, and partnering with them to provide
