SYBASE HIGHLIGHTS HUNDRED GIGABYTE SQL SERVER 10 CUSTOMER SUCCESSES AT USER
CONFERENCE

Keynote Speech Also Previews Preliminary SQL Server 11 Results
Demonstrating Performance and Scalability

DALLAS, TX, May 16, 1995 -- At the Sybase International User Group, Dennis
McEvoy, Sybase vice president of products, used his keynote speech to
highlight several large production SYBASE SQL Server 10 customer
successes. He also previewed preliminary performance results for SQL
Server 11, which is planned for availability in 1995.

SYBASE SQL Server is a leading client/server relational database management
system, offering industry-leading price/performance and advanced options
for enterprise distributed environments.

Large SQL Server Production Applications

SQL Server 10 has been generally available since Q1 1994 and is installed
at more than 70% of Sybase's 20,000-plus customer sites. According to
Dennis McEvoy, many of those customers are using SQL Server 10 to deploy
hundred gigabyte mission critical applications. He gave two examples.

Tele-Communications, Inc. (TCI) is running a customer service data network
that implements a single 140-gigabyte SQL Server 10 database running on an
eight-way SMP platform.

Northwest Airlines has deployed a Passenger Revenue Accounting System that
consists of a 500-gigabyte on-line system distributed across 250 databases
and 42 servers.

In addition, the Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Company's gas transportation
system on SQL Server 10 performs critical tasks faster than on a
mainframe.

Enhanced Scalability with SQL Server 11

McEvoy commented, "Our customers are telling us that SQL Server 10 provides
the performance and reliability they require for real life,
mission-critical applications. SQL Server 11 will provide even greater
performance because of its enhanced scalability - and both Sybase and our
customers are excited about the additional benefits that scalability will
provide."

Preliminary results of Sybase internal tests of SQL Server 11 substantiate
performance claims. Sybase ran tests on a package tracking application
from a worldwide delivery service with an early version of SQL Server 11.
With SYBASE SQL Server 11, the overall application runs three times faster
than SQL Server 10 on identical hardware.

SQL Server 11 Goal: Performance Leadership

Sybase's goal with SQL Server 11 is performance leadership, defined as
highest throughput on major SMP platforms and best price/performance at
each SMP level. Sybase will also enable customers to upgrade from SQL
Server 4.9 and 10 to SQL Server 11 with no changes to existing
applications. In addition, Sybase is also ensuring the performance and
availability of third-party applications with SQL Server 11 through
specific features and programs.

SQL Server 11 will achieve performance leadership through three
breakthrough features. Its logical memory manager optimizes memory usage,
supports any number of names caches, and exploits high-speed cache. Its
tunable block I/O size provides a major advance for mixed workloads and
features an enhanced optimizer. SQL Server 11's data partitioning enables
high-speed concurrent inserts and parallel loads.

Several new features in SQL Server 11 enhance the performance of
third-party packaged applications. For example, the enhanced sub-query
optimizer enhancement makes Peoplesoft running on Sybase extremely
competitive. Other features include non-blocking read to improve I/O in a
mixed workload environment and improved pre-compiler and reusable cursor
binding. In addition, Sybase's new Applications Support Division Lab
(announced May 8,1995) will enable near-concurrent availability of
third-party applications with SQL Server 11.

Agenda-setting approach to quality

According to McEvoy, quality is a top priority with SQL Server 11. The
company is setting new standards for the beta release of software, fully
testing the product on existing SQL Server 10 applications before it goes
into beta. This is in contrast to the standard software practice of using
beta customers to find many of the software bugs. McEvoy stated, "We are
committed tc- moving software bugs closer to our programmers, letting
customers concentrate on their applications."

To achieve quality goals, Sybase has made significant investments over the
past eighteen months in revamping its testing process and certifying
compliance with ISO 9001 quality standards.

In the area of testing, the company's new infrastructure has: reduced cycle
time from four weeks to four days, incorporated customer-oriented testing,
and expanded compatibility testing for more multiple
hardware/software/version combinations.

In terms of ISO 9001 compliance, Sybase is the only 9001-certified
independent database company in North America. SYBASE SQL Server 11 is
ISO-certified from the ground up.

Availability

Sybase is currently scheduled to ship the beta version of SQL Server 11 in
Q3 1995, and begin production shipments in Q4 1995.

SYBASE SQL Server

SQL Server is the number two relational database worldwide in terms of
market share, with market share gains achieved over Oracle and Informix in
1994. SQL Server is currently installed at over 20,000 customer sites
worldwide running on all major computing platforms, including all major
UNIX environments, Windows NT, Novell NetWare, OS/2, and Open VMS.

Sybase, Inc.

Sybase, Inc. is a worldwide leader in client/server software. Sybase is
focused in the four major client/server categories: databases, tools,
database systems management and interoperability, providing desktop to
enterprise scalability. The company's mission is to provide its customers
with an open, adaptable information systems architecture that enables
rapid business change. Headquartered in Emeryville, CA, Sybase is the
