Manulife Financials Investment Operations Selects Sybase as Standard inNew
Client/Server Environment

SYBASE Enables Rapid Business Change for Division of Canada's Largest
Insurance Company

EMERYVILLE, CA, April 24, 1995 --Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise Client/Server
Company, today announced that Manulife Financials Investment Operations, a
division of Canada's largest insurance company headquartered in Toronto,
has selected SYBASE software as the database standard in its new
client/server computing environment. Manulife's Investment Operations
Division has implemented SYBASE for its new trading support and real
estate systems and plans to use SYBASE for client/server systems being
developed for other Manulife operations. Currently, SQL Server, Open
Server, SQL Server Monitor, and SQL Server Manager , and Embedded SQL are
the Sybase products being used in Manulife's new client/server systems.

Manulife Financial, with $40.2 billion in total assets and more than 7,000
employees servicing 2.8 million customers worldwide, depends on effective
distribution of timely financial data to its employees in order to remain
successful in the increasingly competitive insurance and investment arena.
With a mandate to move away from outdated mainframe legacy systems and
develop a new client/server architecture to meet the company's rapid
business changes and evolving information needs, Manulife's Investment
Operations Division chose SYBASE as the underlying relational database for
its new computing environment. Manulife selected SYBASE based on Sybase's
strong market penetration in the financial arena, the openness and
flexibility of the architecture, its interoperability, the ability to work
easily with third party products, and Sybase's support services.

Mark Saunders, assistant vice president of investment systems at Manulife
said, In the increasingly competitive, information driven market of
financial services, it is critical for Manulife to be able to quickly
adapt and implement new information technologies based on changing
business requirements. Sybase, with its proven track record in the
financial community and a technology vision that matched our own, was the
clear database vendor of choice for Manulife's Investment Operations
client/server needs now and in the future. SYBASE fits our criteria by
providing an open and flexible architecture that will enable us to both
work with other client/server vendors and adapt our information technology
systems as our business climate changes.

We are pleased that Manulifes Investment Operations Division has selected
SYBASE for their move from mainframes to client/server, said Richard
Yanowitch, vice president of corporate marketing at Sybase. "SYBASE's open
and flexible architecture enables Manulife to work with other
client/server vendors to create best-of-breed solutions best suited for
their changing technology needs. This flexibility, combined with the
powerful information distribution processing of SYBASE, provides Manulife
with the effective and timely delivery of critical information to its
employees' desktops.

MANULIFE'S MANDATE FOR RAPID BUSINESS CHANGE

The investment arena, which has become increasingly competitive due to
several economic and technology factors, has undergone a great deal of
change in the last decade. Specifically, investment products and services
have become more complicated and competitive, forcing companies to rely
more and more on the advances of technology to deliver the most timely,
accurate financial data and statistics needed to remain viable. Older
technology such as mainframe systems and applications that financial
companies invested in over the last decade has proven inadequate for
today's business requirements. As a result, companies like Manulife
Financial have realized the need to move to client/server computing models
in order to accommodate the requirement for rapid response to changes in
business climates, now and in the future. Manulife selected SYBASE for its
client/server efforts because the flexible and open architecture can
easily adapt as business changes.

MANULIFE'S CLIENT/SERVER INITIATIVE

Three years ago, Manulife's Investment Operations Division, which is
responsible for the management of the company's bond, stock, mortgage,
real estate portfolios and treasury operations, was assigned to develop a
new computing environment that would eventually replace legacy mainframe
systems. The legacy systems and proprietary database environment the
company had in place made it difficult to integrate and access critical
information throughout the company.

In order to maximize productivity and remain competitive, Manulife required
a new computing environment that enabled efficient and effective delivery
of critical information to its employees. Manulife's answer was a
client/server environment, running SYBASE database software, that
facilitates easy access and utilization of critical data throughout
Manulife's operations. Today, Manulife has successfully implemented
client/server systems running SYBASE in many of its operations.

MANULIFE'S TRADING ROOM WITH SYBASE

Today, Manulife's trading room is running a trading support client/server
system. Previously, the trading room housed terminals that only displayed
pages of information that was read-only and mostly not useful. The new
client/server trading support system features Hewlett-Packard database
servers with SYBASE SQL Server and Hewlett-Packard workstation clients
located on the trading floor.

With the new system, traders are now able to access essential, up-to-date
information from their on-floor HP workstations in order to make critical,
informed decisions fast. The system runs Reuters, a software application
that allows traders to receive information, such as news and market data,
directly from stock exchanges around the world. Overall, the trading
floor's new client/server system has provided Manulife's customers with
better service since the traders are now able to make the most informed
decisions possible.

SYBASE is also being used in Manulife's client/server real estate system.
In addition, Manulife's corporate group has implemented a help desk
application by Remedy, running on SYBASE. SYBASE will be used in
client/server systems currently being planned in other operations groups
of Manulife.

Sybase Used by Financial Institutions Worldwide

Like Manulife, many financial institutions undergoing rapid business
changes are moving towards client/server computing environments as a way
to gain competitive advantages through improvements in system performance,
distributed information, and data management. SYBASE software has become
the standard of choice for many leading financial institutions worldwide
including Chase Manhattan Bank, Citicorp Investment Bank, American Express
and Solomon Brothers.
