UB NETWORKS UNVEILS THE FIRST NON-STOP ATM SUPER SWITCHING HUB

GEOLAN/500 OFFERS THE BEST PRICE/PERFORMANCE FOR MIGRATION FROM SHARED LAN,
TO SWITCHED LAN, TO ATM STARTING AT LESS THAN $240 PER ETHERNET PORT

Santa Clara, California -- May 22, 1995 -- UB Networks today unveiled
GeoLAN/500, the only non-stop, fault-tolerant ATM-based hub to offer up to
40Gbps throughput capacity and distributed network management starting at
less than $240 per ethernet port. The GeoLAN/500 has been engineered to
provide an affordable migration path from legacy LANs to ATM and to allow
customers to install high bandwidth networks incrementally as their needs
require.

The GeoLAN/500 hub sets the standard for hub price/performance with several
key firsts. It smoothly migrates from shared legacy LANs, to switched
LANs, to ATM switched networks; its industrial design provides a unique
combination of hub security and serviceability features; it has non-stop
hot-swappable modules and components for on-line upgrades and repairs;
and, it is the only hub that supports policy-based distributed hub
management.

"GeoLAN/500 is the first hub on the market to provide the features needed
for a seamless path to the ATM future -- without an up-front premium,"
said Tyrone Pike, UB Networks senior vice president and chief technical
officer. "Because customers can upgrade this ATM-based hub incrementally,
they can feel confident taking the first step toward ATM today."

Ready for the ATM Future

GeoLAN/500 is the only ATM-based hub that accommodates a full range of
shared and switched media connections including ethernet, token ring, and
FDDI, as well as integrated internetworking capabilities. For customers
looking to add flexibility to their existing shared LANs, the GeoLAN/500
offers a unique combination of port mobility (12 ethernet segments or 6
token rings) and integrated LAN switching. This technology combination
provides customers with both configuration flexibility and improved
bandwidth at a competitive price.

The GeoLAN/500 supports desktop ATM ports operating at 25Mbps, and server
and backbone ATM ports operating at 155Mbps. It features dual ATM switch
fabrics that can be incrementally upgraded from 5 to 40Gbps (aggregate
switching bandwidth). These can be used in redundant configurations or to
provide massive capacity.

Hot Swappable, Non-Stop Design

The GeoLAN/500 offers one of the lowest operating costs over the life of
the product on the market today by eliminating down time, minimizing costs
for adds, moves, and changes and providing fully- redundant critical
components. Network interface modules, power-supplies, cooling fans and
switching fabrics are all hot-swappable -- they can be inserted and
removed while the GeoLAN/500 operates continuously permitting system
maintenance and upgrades without system shutdown. The Access/EMPower
management module provides non-stop software installation and updating
which can be updated across the network from a central network management
console.

GeoLAN/500 significantly reduces mean time-to-repair with its back-panel
cabling system that allows a network technician to swap modules without
recabling. Other hubs typically have cables attached at the front of the
hub that must be disconnected making swapping a board more difficult.

"By minimizing scheduled and unscheduled down-time, GeoLAN/500 is a
superior solution both for the horizontal wiring closet and vertical
backbone distribution applications for buildings," said Pike. "We
engineered this product to deliver 10 years of non-stop hub operation.
Once turned on it runs continuously, even during upgrades and routine
maintenance."

Policy-Based Network Management

GeoLAN/500 is self-managing because of the Access/EMPower embedded
real-time management module. The system is self-configuring and can be
equipped with a range of policy-based management applications. For
example, with the NetStorm Terminator software option network broadcast
storms are eliminated automatically based on policies pre-determined by
the network administrator. This will save network managers hundreds of
hours and MIS managers thousands of dollars.

The GeoLAN/500 incorporates advanced, innovative technology that allows a
wireless, infrared connection to the unit from a sub-notebook system. It
is the first hub with an infrared access port that provides secure,
convenient, on-site management without a physical connection to the hub. A
network manager can log on within the wiring closet, eliminating the need
to return to the central management console.

Migration to High-Bandwidth Switched Networks for Access/One Users

Owners of UB Networks Access/One hubs will have an easy and affordable
migration to ATM via GeoLAN/500 since existing Access/One modules are
common to both architectures and can plug directly into the GeoLAN/500
hub. In addition, the performance of the Access/One network interface
modules is enhanced by the center switch architecture of the GeoLAN/500
hub which provides 12 switched ethernet segments.

"Because we understand the importance of preserving the investment our
customers have in their network, we have a long tradition of building
backward and forward compatibility into our products," said Pike.
GeoLAN/500 lets Access/One customers leverage their existing technology as
they migrate to a hub which supports high-bandwidth networking.

Price Leadership and Availability

Compared to existing super-hub technology, GeoLAN/500 offers the industrys
most aggressive entry- level pricing for port mobile concentration. It is
offered at $234 per port for port mobile ethernet concentration, a price
point that is 30-50% lower than comparable offerings.

GeoLAN/500 will be available in September, 1995.
