Utopian Worlds -- An Overview
Omega Technologies

May 12, 1995 -- Omega Technologies recently announced the release of
Utopian Worlds - a software product for the creation of state-of-the-art,
graphical adventure games. With it, you can easily draft complex
adventures with a few mouse clicks. But don't worry, this is not a
simplistic, limited adventure system, either, because it has the ability
to conform to any type of adventure game. Read on, and you will see that
it will soon become the standard for adventure gaming without limits.

About

Adventure games created with the Utopian Worlds system can be any type of
game. They can be futuristic games or classic medieval games. They can be
hack-and-slash games or a thinking man's game. The entire premise of
Utopian Worlds is its ability to conform. Also, adventures created with
Utopian Worlds are royalty-free, meaning that you can distribute them
however you wish: for fun or profit.

Utopian Worlds enables the creation of adventure games with in-depth,
quality storylines. You can create a variety of people who converse,
puzzles and hostile monsters and then use them in your adventures. You can
create entire villages, countries and worlds with stunning graphic detail.
You can customize houses, churches and taverns, populating them with
exciting, vivacious people. You can use full motion video, sound bites and
music in your adventures. In a robust point-and-click environment, you can
assemble these parts to create whole civilizations and worlds that adapt
to your imagination. This is adventure gaming without limits!

Old style adventure games require you to follow a given path. They provide
the world and you merely experience it. But, imagine creating the world
and then letting your friends and colleagues experience it! And when
you're done with one adventure, you can create more and more unlike old
style adventure games that are done once you've finished the game. Unlike
some adventure creation systems, Utopian Worlds is user friendly! That's
right, you can immediately sit down with the Utopian Worlds package and
begin to create your very first world. There are no ugly text screens and
no arcane codes. Since Utopian Worlds is a Microsoft(R) Windows(R)
application, you'll know how to use it immediately. But if you need it,
complete online help is always just a keystroke away.

How it Works - Features

Utopian Worlds is based on a wide variety of components. Each adventure you
create is an assemblage of components and you will see that there is a
component to suit nearly every adventure creator's need. Each component is
also reusable, so you can create general purpose components and then use
them in future adventures that you create. Better yet, you can create
component libraries and distribute them over the Internet! Most components
provide you with opportunities to insert multimedia and scripting wherever
possible, giving you complete freedom over what happens during the course
of your adventure.

Here's just a sampling of component types:

MAP: The Map component defines the landscape of the adventure. You can
define links on each map to other maps you have created. In this manner,
you can create multiple houses on one map (a village) and then define a
separate map for each house.

ENTITY: the Entity component defines a living person or monster. Entities
are powerful components because they can carry on conversations with the
user! These aren't one or two line 'clues,' either. The user actually
directs the flow of conversation. If this doesn't suit you, it's easy to
simulate one or two line sayings. It's up to you!

Of course, there are types defining items for any purpose - fighting,
bargaining or unlocking doors. There are types defining item recipes where
one item plus another yields yet another item. There are types for
time-based events, giving your adventures a realistic feel. You can define
a certain action to happen only after the user has done a specific action
or after a predefined time period. User friendly adventures don't have to
be static anymore!

Utopian Worlds is also an info expert. It can process and display many
different data types, allowing you the freedom to use whatever type of
information is appropriate to your adventure. Utopian Worlds also gives
you the freedom to choose when you want to display information. You can
display when the user steps somewhere specific or when the user asks for
it. Tie the informational display to a time-based event, and you can
display information after a specified time! That's power! When the user
reads a book, up pops a sophisticated hypertext file! Or even a movie! You
can include hypertext files, because Utopian Worlds supports Windows Help
files. Want fonts and styles in your text? Utopian Worlds can handle
Windows Write format. Be on the cutting edge and include a video clip.
Utopian Worlds is flexible.

"What about story?!", you ask. And you should. The key to any good
adventure game is its storyline. With a constricting system, you could be
out in the cold. You may be stuck with just displaying graphics, or have
no chance whatsoever to define a decent storyline! Not so with Utopian
Worlds. Utopian Worlds provides you with power to foster and create story.
You can do this by displaying ancient tomes of wisdom (in Windows Write
format), decaying scrolls (hypertext, of course) or the voice of the gods
(Wave audio). Best of all, Utopian Worlds lets you annotate nearly every
component with your words. For many, words are the most powerful way to
create story; they are even better than pictures. That is why books often
have more impact than feature length movies. You can describe items with
intricate detail instead of just one or two words. Describe grass not as
"grass" but as "lush grass sparkling with pearls of dew."

On the technical side of things, Utopian Worlds gives you power to create.
Utopian Worlds provides you with an unlimited framework for your adventure
games and an escape hatch, the script language. Now you have the power to
create worlds with your imagination... and a copy of Utopian Worlds.
