Andyne GQL Version 3.3.2 Available July 17th
Featuring Multi-pass reporting, time governors, and scripting

June 26, 1995 -- Kingston, ON, Canada -- Andyne Computing Limited announced
today that the latest release of its Andyne GQL Decision Support System
(DSS) software will be generally available July 1 7th. GQL allows
non-technical users to query and report on information in relational
databases. GQL 3.3.2 includes a feature for automatically resolving
interdependent calculations (commonly known as multi-pass reporting), a
timed-based governor to protect database systems from overly long queries,
and a scripting facility that helps automate routine tasks.

In addition, GQL 3.3.2 has been architected to provide support for a new
facility Andyne calls Query Management Option (QMO). QMO will be available
for Windows and Macintosh platforms in Q3 of 1995. It will permit users
and database administrators to batch queries, to defer submitting queries
and submit detached queries from a remote location.

"Andyne GQL 3.3.2 enhances our customers ability to manage their business
by giving them greater flexibility in asking business questions and more
control over when and where they get the answers," said A. Cameron
Thompson, Andyne President and C.E.O. "Customers who upgrade to GQL 3.3.2
today will have access to detached, deferred, and co-operative batch
capabilities through our new Query Management Option."

Interdependent Calculations

GQL 3.3.2 automatically resolves interdependent calculations within a
report. That means users can perform calculations based on other
calculations such as standard deviation. And in addition to performing
standard calculations for subtotals and grand totals, users can now define
their own calculations. This expanded reporting capability opens the door
to powerful data analysis possibilities. The interdependent calculations
GQL 3.3.2 supports include user-defined calculations within sub-totals,
and detail calculations for a calculated columns, subtotals, and grand
totals. Subtotals and grand totals can calculate the same expression as a
calculated column and can be user defined.

Time-based Governor

DBAs can set a time-based governor that cancels queries that run beyond a
specified length of time. Administrators can optionally allow users to set
their own governor time limits. The value of this feature is that it
reduces traffic on the network, particularly important during peak
periods.

Scripting

GQL 3.3.2 supports scripting on the Macintosh through AppleScript.
Scripting for Windows will be available in GQL 4.0 in early 1996.
Scripting is a means of automating routine operations or labor-intensive
tasks. Scriptable applications can also be scripted to work together,
producing results that can't be achieved by either application alone. GQL
3.3.2 can be scripted either by typing the English script for the actions
or by recording the users' actions as they work.

Query Management Option 1.0

The Query Management Option will provide detached, deferred and cooperative
query scheduling capabilities.

Detached Queries (batch)

The Detached query option allows the user to submit a query to run at a
later time, even with their workstation disconnected or shut down. Query
results are saved to a table in the DBMS and users are notified by a QMO
message that their queries are ready to be retrieved to the desktop. The
benefit to users is the flexibility to run queries from remote locations.
For example, a salesperson could launch a query about a particular
customer sales history, ensuring they have the very latest information,
then retrieve the query at the customer site when they arrive.

Deferred Queries

Deferred query option requires no server-based software or ongoing
Information Systems (IS) personnel involvement. Users simply select QMO
from GQL's pull-down menus and specify the time in the future when the
query is to be submitted to the database. QMO allows GQL users to connect
to other databases -- and even exit from GQL -- while queued queries are
being processed. When the results of queued queries are ready to be
retrieved, users are notified by a QMO message.

Cooperative Deferred Queries

QMO 1.0's Cooperative deferred option allows administrators to regulate the
timing of processing queries in order to allow IS to regulate DBMS loading
as well as event sequencing. IS can manipulate queries and manage them
enterprise-wide. For example, IS could elect to run marketing queries at
night, once the transactional dbms had been updated, in order to ensure
that up-to-the-minute sales data was available to marketing decision
makers. The benefit to the enterprise is a more efficient information
management system by giving IS far greater management capability.

GQL is a powerfully simple decision support application for accessing
transaction-level data on relational data sources. With GQL, there are no
character based pick lists posing as a graphical interface, no need to
remember obscure database names or join conditions, no need to piece
together some pseudo-SQL syntax -- no need to understand SQL at all. GQL
is an intuitive!, visual solution that makes business sense. It provides
an open interface for add-on extensions like Crosstabs so that end-users
can choose the reporting capability they need. Whether users want columnar
reports, charts and graphs, crosstab reports, forms, or labels, GQL's
Report Extensions represent the quickest route between the database and
the desktop.

GQL offers what industry analysts call a Managed Query Environment (MQE).
Andyne pioneered MQE, which synchronizes IS expertise and end-user
freedom. MQE provides enterprise-wide consistency and security harmonized
with decision makers' needs for flexibility and timely analysis and
reporting.

Andyne is a publicly traded company on the NASDAQ National Market System
under the symbol "ADYNF" and on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the
symbol "ADY." Andyne is a leader in the development and marketing of
Decision Support System (DSS) software with over 50,000 installations
worldwide. Andyne's applications offer a Managed Query Environment (MQE),
synchronizing end-user needs for access, analysis, and reporting with
Information Systems (IS) needs for security and enterprise-wide
consistency. Andyne GQL is an ad hoc query and reporting tool for
relational data sources; the suggested list price is $495 per user copy.
PaBLO is an OLAP (online analytic processing) client tool for
multidimensional data sources, it is priced at $695 per user copy.
Andyne's applications offer easy-to-use, visual interfaces that can be
customized to suit any business need. Andyne services all of its products
through consulting, training, and technical support.
