Apple Announces New Japanese Language Kit, KanjiTalk 7.5 for U.S. and
Canada

Two Mac OS Choices Available for Japanese-Language Customers

CUPERTINO, California--June 1, 1995--Apple Computer, Inc. today announced
availability in the United States and Canada of a new version of its
popular Japanese Language Kit as well as KanjiTalk 7.5, the Japanese
version of the Mac OS. Both of these products allow North American
customers to run Japanese-language applications on a Macintosh computer
purchased locally.

Version 1.2 of the Japanese Language Kit is now fully compatible with
Macintosh System 7.5, the current version of the Mac OS. In addition, it
includes three Japanese TrueType fonts that are compatible with Apple's
QuickDraw GX graphics software; the most updated version of Kotoeri, the
Japanese input method; new 'kana' keyboard labels; and demos of several
Japanese and WorldScript- savvy applications.

With the Japanese Language Kit software running on an English- language
Macintosh, the Macintosh user interface remains in English; however, users
can run both English-language and Japanese-language applications and
create documents that contain both languages. The Japanese Language Kit is
used by students learning a second language, multinational businesses,
multilingual desktop publishing professionals and bilingual home computer
users.

The second product, KanjiTalk 7.5, is the same version of the Mac OS that
is used by customers in Japan. KanjiTalk 7.5 offers users the same
capabilities as Japanese Language Kit users have, including the ability to
run Japanese-language applications and create Japanese documents. The key
difference between the two products is that KanjiTalk offers a
Japanese-language user interface. Apple expects that the KanjiTalk 7.5
product will be used primarily by Japanese nationals in North America who
prefer to work with a completely Japanese system.

Apple also offers a Chinese Language Kit, which allows customers to run
both the English-language version of the Mac OS as well as use
Chinese-language applications and create documents that contain both
Chinese and English.

Language Capabilities Based on WorldScript

Apple provides this seamless multi-lingual capability on the Macintosh
through its WorldScript technology, which provides foundational support
for most languages around the world. With WorldScript built into the Mac
OS, new writing systems can be supported on any Macintosh computer with
the addition of fonts, input methods and the script.

In a separate announcement, Claris Corporation yesterday announced
ClarisWorks 4.0, the latest addition to the growing number of applications
that support the language kits, and the first 'works' product to provide
this world-ready functionality. Users throughout the world of the Japanese
Language Kit and Chinese Language Kit can now count on ClarisWorks 4.0 to
correctly display, process, and print text in these languages. In addition
to ClarisWorks 4.0, other applications that support the language kits are
HyperCard from Apple; In Control from Attain Corporation; Nisus Writer
from Nisus Software Inc.; StatView from Abacus Concepts; WinText from
WinSoft; WordPerfect for Macintosh from Novell, Inc.; and WorldWrite from
WorldSoftware.
