AT&T sponsors TV program on the information superhighway

NEW YORK -- AT&T said today it is sponsoring a 30- minute TV program on the
information superhighway that will air in some 20 cities beginning
Sunday.

"We wanted people to experience the presence, promise and progress of the
information superhighway in a way that's easy to understand," said Alex
Mandl, AT&T executive vice president and CEO of the Communications
Services Group.

In addition, the program includes four commercials that discuss pending
telecommunications legislation and make the case for introducing real
competition to local telephone services.

Mandl explained this is the first time the company is using paid
programming to advance its views on legislation.

"AT&T is working hard to be sure federal and state legislators understand
that innovation is enhanced by competition," Mandl said. "We believe
customer needs should set the pace of progress and that they deserve a
choice in how they get information and who they get it from."

From a remote medical clinic on the floor of the Grand Canyon to an
inner-city career center for high school graduates to the home of a
self-appointed "cyberqueen," AT&T shows how the benefits of technology are
coming to everyday life, in its program called "The Street You Live On --
The Information Superhighway and You." The program, hosted by George
Plimpton, offers a collection of viewpoints from Doris Kearns Goodwin,
Pulitzer Prize winner and historian, Arno Penzias, Nobel Prize laureate
and vice president for research at AT&T Bell Labs, and Nicholas
Negroponte, director, MIT's Media Lab.

Performers Laurie Anderson and Eric Bogosian talk about the vastness and
freedom of cyberspace, and New York Yankees star Pat Kelly shares how he
honed his competitive edge through computing.

At the end of the program, viewers are prompted to call an 800 number.
Callers can choose the information they're interested in, including a
brochure about the information superhighway, a brochure about the
importance of having a choice in local phone service and an offer to send
a free telegram to their legislators to support real competition in local
phone service.

AT&T will air the program in Boston, Dallas, Cleveland, Miami, Pittsburgh,
Phoenix and St. Louis as well as Washington on June 25.

It is scheduled to run July 9 in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago,
Philadelphia, Atlanta, Houston, Minneapolis, Denver, Grand Rapids and San
Antonio.

On July 16, the program is slated to air in New York, Detroit, Seattle,
Flagstaff and Des Moines.

People interested in watching the program should check their local
listings.
