BANYAN SYSTEMS REVEALS "REDWOOD" STRATEGIC VISION FOR THE EXTENDED
ENTERPRISE NETWORK

WESTBORO, MA, May 16, 1995 -- Banyan Systems Incorporated (NASDAQ:BNYN)
today announced REDWOOD, a three year vision to enable organizations to
find, share and manage information in the emerging extended enterprise
marketplace.

The extended enterprise network -- which goes beyond the traditional
boundaries of today's enterprise networks -- will encompass remote and
mobile workers, inter-enterprise networks and electronic commerce
technologies. REDWOOD will build upon the capabilities of existing Banyan
products for multivendor, multiprotocol enterprise networks. REDWOOD
consists of three core initiatives:

Click to Information -- Based on the StreetTalk global directory; will
offer users a powerful new way to access and use information and resources
throughout the extended enterprise

Business on Mail -- Based on Banyan BeyondMail and Intelligent Messaging
technology; will become the platform for building and extending
multivendor line-of-business workflow applications by combining electronic
mail and client/server databases

Self-Managing Networks -- Based on Banyan's Distributed Enterprise
Management Architecture (DeMarc), will automate routine management tasks
and provide planning and design tools for a more proactive approach to
network and systems management

"The initiatives within REDWOOD will help us deliver the necessary
solutions to our customers as they expand their networked enterprise to
include their mobile and remote workforce, suppliers and customers," said
John Paul, Banyan senior vice president, product and business development.
"Based on the robust network services of VINES and ENS, REDWOOD will
provide the solutions to help organizations compete in a global,
electronic economy."

"Banyan differentiates itself by recognizing the heterogeneous nature of
large corporate environments, and delivers cost-effective management
solutions," said Blayne Maring, assistant vice president - Technology
Specification for GTE Telephone Operations. "Banyan's REDWOOD vision goes
the next step in helping corporations leverage the strengths of their
business partners in the delivery of enterprise solutions."

Click to Information

The Click to Information initiative will empower users to find, access and
share information they need, regardless of where it is in the extended
enterprise network. Click to Information enables users to "pull"
information and applications to their PCs, eliminating the need for
information systems departments to "push" these capabilities toward the
users. It also will enable network administrators to control access to
shared information and resources.

The foundation of the Click to Information initiative is the StreetTalk
global directory. StreetTalk is the leading enterprise directory that
today keeps track of network objects, such as applications, file volumes,
printers, databases and users within a single enterprise. Banyan's
Universal StreetTalk, licensed to applications developers royalty-free,
will enable additional line of business applications to be accessed by the
user in the extended enterprise. REDWOOD will extend StreetTalk to become
the new Internet Business Directory, providing this information to
millions of users worldwide.

"Attempting to conduct business across the Internet today is very difficult
due to the lack of common protocols, directories and security," said Larry
Gauthier, director of network systems, Information Technology Division,
University of Michigan. "The REDWOOD initiatives will empower
organizations such as the University of Michigan to reach beyond our
traditional networks to partners and suppliers across the Internet to
conduct business in new and exciting ways."

Business on Mail

As a key initiative of REDWOOD, Business on Mail represents a breakthrough
approach to building, deploying and managing line of business
applications. Business on Mail will use electronic mail and the Internet
to extend the reach of corporate database applications out to remote
users, business partners and consumers, using the messaging software that
already resides on most PCs. It will be accomplished by combining
client/server databases, store and forward electronic messaging and
workflow automation. The Business on Mail initiative will utilize the
innovative BeyondMail electronic forms, rules and agents technology and
extend it to work with any database or electronic mail application.

Self-Managing Networks

The Self-Managing Networks initiative focuses on alleviating the tremendous
pressure organizations face in deploying and controlling extended
enterprises. It enables the growth of these enterprises by applying
intelligent, network-resident agents to automate many of the routine,
labor-intensive tasks administrators face today. Based on Banyan's DeMarc
intelligent agent architecture, this initiative will leverage Business on
Mail workflow, rules and forms technology to allow the network to monitor
and manage its own operation. These solutions will be able to predict and
identify potential problems before they happen and take corrective action
with a minimum of human intervention.
