BARR/RJE Connects via SNA Gateways

(Gainesville, FL - June 20, 1995) Barr Systems today announced that its
industry leading Remote Job Entry (RJE) workstations can now connect to
the mainframe via SNA gateways from Novell and Microsoft. Novell's NetWare
for SAA and Microsofts SNA Server are arguably the two most powerful
gateways on the market today. Each supplies an Applications Programming
Interface (API) for which the BARR/RJE product has been adapted.

With over 20,000 RJE systems installed, Barr Systems, Inc. is well known
for its high performance and extensive features. The products are used for
high speed remote printing and file transfers to IBM compatible
mainframes. The new interface lets BARR/RJE share the same mainframe
connection that is used by NetWare for SAA or SNA Server for 3270 terminal
sessions. Previously, BARR/RJE required a dedicated Token Ring, SDLC,
X.25/QLLC, or COAX connection to the mainframe.

The Request Unit Interface (RUI) API allows BARR/RJE to obtain up to 20
simultaneous mainframe sessions from the SNA gateway. This includes up to
seven high speed printing sessions, four "reader" sessions, four "punch"
sessions, one console terminal session, and four 3270 sessions on the
BARR/RJE workstation. The reader and punch sessions are used for high
speed data transfers to and from the mainframe.

Production printing is one of the key problems to be solved when moving
business applications from legacy mainframes to client-server
implementations. High-speed printers capable of 50 to 400 pages per minute
and continuous duty cycles are expensive, yet renewable resources. The
answer during the migration period, which could last up to 10 years, is to
be able to use these printers in both worlds at the same time.

BARR/RJE is a comprehensive, PC based product that can be enhanced with
options to accept print data from AS/400s, UNIX hosts, and DEC VAXes. Data
from the mainframe and other sources can be sent to serial or parallel
printers attached to the PC. It also can be sent to Novell or UNIX print
queues. With the PRINT370 option, you can connect channel attached
printers directly to BARR/RJE. This makes it an ideal solution for data
centers that are migrating from mainframe to client server architectures.
Expensive printers can be used by the old and new systems simultaneously.

BARR/RJE has a list price of $1,790 and includes the SNA gateway link, a
sophisticated print spooler, and complete documentation.
