CHIPCOM INTRODUCES ETHERNET MODULES FOR ONCORE SWITCHING SYSTEM

New Products Include Industry's First User-Configurable Mixed Media Module

SOUTHBOROUGH, Mass., May 23, 1995 -- Chipcom Corporation (Nasdaq/CHPM)
today unveiled two new Ethernet modules for its ONcore Switching System,
including the ONcore EtherFlex Media Module, the industry's first
user-configurable mixed media module, and the ONcore 36-Port 10BASE-T
Media Module, a high-density module for twisted-pair cabling.

The EtherFlex Media Module enables customers to mix-and-match different
media ports to meet diverse cabling requirements, while the 36-Port
10BASE-T Media Module delivers high-end functionality at a low
price-per-port. Chipcom's new Ethernet modules reflect the company's
commitment to protecting customers' existing investments by providing
cost-effective, flexible solutions that accommodate a wide variety of
cabling and density needs for the ONcore Switching System.

Chipcom's new modules are monitored and managed by the ONcore System's
scalable distributed management intelligence, a single management module
that supports both Ethernet and Token Ring media modules. In addition to
being hot-swappable, the new modules both include integrated Repeater MIB
statistics for base-level reporting on a per-port or connector basis. The
two modules also support up to two optional Network Monitor Cards that
provide comprehensive Remote Monitoring (RMON) network management, as well
as optional Private Line Cards for protection from intrusion and
eavesdropping.

ONcore EtherFlex Media Module Explained

Using a variety of field-installable input/output (I/O) cards, Chipcom's
ONcore EtherFlex Media Module allows users to customize a mixed-media
solution to support a wide range of cabling combinations, including:
unshielded twisted-pair (UTP), shielded twisted-pair (STP), fiber-optic,
and thick and thin Ethernet cabling. Because the I/O cards are designed
for simple field installation, the EtherFlex Module can be easily changed
as the network evolves.

The single-slot EtherFlex Module delivers "bandwidth-on-demand" by allowing
users to switch ports to any of the ONcore System's eight Ethernet
backplane networks. The 10BASE-T or 10BASE-FB/FL I/O cards reduce network
downtime due to built-in port redundancy for automatic switchover to
back-up ports on the same module, on a different module, or in a different
hub.

"Chipcom's EtherFlex Module allows us to customize a flexible,
multiple-media solution that protects our existing Ethernet cabling
investments," said Steve Ehlerding, network manager at Springfield,
Ohio-based Navistar International.

"With integrated management, port switching, fault tolerance and security
available in a single module, we're getting the functionality we need
today, while at the same time preserving valuable ONcore System slots for
future products and technologies."

ONcore 36-Port 10BASE-T Media Module Defined

The ONcore 36-Port 10BASE-T Module occupies a single slot in an ONcore
Switching System and provides a cost-effective, high-density solution for
UTP-supported Ethernet networks. Bank switching of three, 12-Port Telco
connectors simplifies the module's use and allows workgroups to be easily
manipulated. Each Telco connector can be switched to any of the eight
ONcore System Ethernet backplane networks.

Availability

Chipcom's new ONcore EtherFlex Media Module and related I/O cards, and the
ONcore 36-Port 10BASE-T Media Module are scheduled to be available in the
timeframes indicated below.

The 6104M-MOD (ONcore EtherFlex Media Module Motherboard), 6103D-AUIM
(10BASE-5 Male EtherFlex I/O Card), the 6104D-TPP (10BASE-T EtherFlex I/O
Card), and the 6136M-TPCL (ONcore 36-Port 10BASE-T Media Module) are
available immediately. The 6102D-FIB (10BASE-FB/FL EtherFlex I/O Card)
will be available in 30 Days.

Later this year, Chipcom will offer its customers two additional EtherFlex
I/O products, a repeater AUI Card (10BASE-5) and a BNC Card (10BASE-2).

Founded in 1983, Chipcom Corporation designs, manufactures, markets and
services fault-tolerant intelligent switching systems, including hub,
internetworking and network management products, for remote site, campus
and enterprise network computing environments. The Southborough,
Mass.-based company reported record revenue of $268 million for its 1994
fiscal year, ended December 31, a 67 percent increase over 1993.

According to the market research firm Dataquest, Inc., Chipcom is the
world's third largest supplier of intelligent hubs. Together with its
resellers, Chipcom has a presence in more than 40 countries, and the
company employs over 925 people worldwide. For the third consecutive year,
Chipcom has been cited by Fortune magazine as one of the 100
fastest-growing companies in America.
