COMPAQ STRENGTHENS APPLICATION SERVER OFFERINGS -- NEW HARDWARE AND
SOFTWARE COMBINE TO DELIVER EVEN HIGHER-AVAILABILITY SYSTEMS

HOUSTON, June 20, 1995 -- Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ) today
announced new hardware and software products which further strengthen its
position in the high-availability application server market.

On the hardware side, Compaq announced the On-Line Recovery Server, which
builds on the technology introduced in the Standby Recovery Server in May,
1995. The On-Line Recovery Server expands Compaq's high-availability,
application server offerings and gives customers an even higher level of
availability when deploying business-critical client/server applications
on Compaq platforms. On the software side, Compaq announced several key
additions to Compaq SmartStart, the Compaq integration tool for installing
and integrating reliable servers, including key enhancements to Compaq
Insight Manager, the company's server management utility.

Compaq plans to offer our customers the performance, manageability and
high-availability advantages typically associated with midrange systems
technology, while maintaining PC-server-like pricing, said Gene Austin,
vice president marketing, Compaq Systems Division. Today's announcement
delivers another piece of that plan to our customers while helping to
strengthen their confidence in deploying application servers using
client/server technology from Compaq and its key operating system and
database partners.

On-Line Recovery Server

The On-Line Recovery Server for the ProLiant family of servers, available
in the third quarter 1995, builds on the technology originally developed
and implemented in the Standby Recovery Server introduced in May, 1995.
Delivering even higher levels of system availability while maximizing the
user's investment in server hardware, the On-Line Recovery Server is ideal
for supporting mission-critical application services in multiple-server
environments.

The On-Line Recovery Server utilizes a combination of hardware and software
to allow two ProLiant servers, simultaneously on-line and active, to
provide back-up processing for each other in the event of a system outage
on either system. When one server senses the other has become unavailable,
the On-Line Recovery Server hardware and software activates and
automatically switches external storage to the functioning system and
re-initiates database and other network operations on the available
server. Users can then logon to the functioning server, which will handle
all functions once performed by the unavailable server. The On-Line
Recovery Server requires no administrator intervention after initial
configuration and set-up.

Oracle database applications running under Windows NT will be the first
database products to support Compaq's On-Line Recovery Server. Under this
scenario, if a ProLiant server running an Oracle database application
fails, Oracle agents will automatically re-initiate and recover all
database operations on the second server, allowing users to resume their
work once the database has fully recovered.

The On-Line Recovery Server is ideal for customers with mission-critical
applications that require paired servers to act as on-line backups for
each other while still running their own applications. In addition to the
On-Line Recovery Server, Compaq also offers a full range of fault
management technology in the ProLiant family of servers which includes
hot-pluggable drives, advanced Error Checking and Correcting (ECC) memory,
off-line backup processors, and redundant power supplies.

Key Additions to SmartStart

Compaq today announced SmartStart v2.30, the Compaq integration tool for
installing and integrating reliable servers. SmartStart now supports
several new operating system and database software products from Compaq's
key industry partners.

First, SmartStart v2.30 now supports the installation of the Microsoft's
BackOffice family of products. When available, customers can purchase
BackOffice from any authorized Microsoft reseller and utilize Compaq's
SmartStart to install, optimize and integrate BackOffice products on
Compaq systems. This new installation process allows customers who install
Windows NT 3.51 from SmartStart to use Microsoft's retail CD for
installing and integrating SQL Server 6 on Compaq systems. All other
products in the BackOffice suite -- SNA Server, Mail Server, Systems
Management Server, and Exchange Server (pending availability) -- will be
incorporated under this new approach later in 1995.

Customers can realize performance gains of up to 125 percent when they use
SmartStart to install Windows NT or SQL Server 6 on Compaq systems. The
gains come from the system optimization SmartStart automatically handles
after customers answer straightforward questions while installing the
product. Additional SmartStart integration and installation benefits
include expanded levels of system reliability and dependability which
yield the high-availability systems customers demand when implementing
business-critical applications using client/server technology.

As part of a continuing commitment to make Compaq servers the easiest, best
integrated solutions to own, Compaq also announced that SmartStart would
support the new 120MHz models of the Compaq ProSignia 500, also introduced
today. (See related announcement.) In addition, SmartStart 2.30 now
incorporates support for the following:

* UnixWare -- UnixWare 2 Application Server, UnixWare 2 Single Processor
Upgrade, UnixWare 2, OnLine Data Manager, UnixWare 2 Software Development
Kit. UnixWare 2's symmetric multi-processing kernal, multi-threaded
drivers and I/O subsystems combine for optimal performance in demanding
enterprise environments.

* SCO UNIX -- SCO OpenServer Release 5, offers several new features aimed
at the business critical server market such as journaled file system,
improved SMP scalability, and NetWare support.

* NetWare -- NetWare 4.1J (Japanese version), Additive licensing support.
NetWare 4.1 is a powerful, scaleable, flexible network operating system
that is enhanced for ease of use and system manageability. Additive
licensing will permit users to add users to existing licenses in 5-user
increments.

* Compaq Insight Manager -- Compaq Insight Manager 2.50 is the Compaq
application for easily managing your servers. This version of Insight
Manager includes expanded integration with Microsoft Systems Management
Server (SMS). In addition, SNMP agent support for UnixWare 2 has been
included. Insight Manager 2.50 offers a multi-server shutdown capability
from one uninterruptible power supply (UPS), as well as support for the
Standby Recovery Server and On-Line Recovery Server products.
