DIGITAL EQUIPMENT CORPORATION, THE CALIFORNIA SECRETARY OF STATE, TEALE
DATA CENTER NAMED FINALISTS IN NII AWARDS FOR CALIFORNIA ELECTION SERVER
INTERNET PROJECT

Recognized for Achievement in using Information Superhighway

LOS ANGELES, Calif., June 12, 1995 -- Digital Equipment Corporation
together with the California Secretary of State and the Teale Data Center
of Sacramento have been selected as finalists for the first annual
National Information Infrastructure (NII) Awards, which recognize
outstanding achievement using the information superhighway.

The Digital/Secretary of State team was chosen for their collaborative
effort on the California Elections Server Internet project. They were
among more than 500 entries along with a diverse group of organizations
ranging from the Smithsonian Institution and Centers for Disease Control
(CDC) to the Rolling Stones' Voodoo Lounge World Tour Website. A total of
36 finalists were named in six categories: arts and entertainment,
business, community, education, government and health.

The diversity of the NII Awards finalists -- which range from entries that
enhance education and communication on serious issues to pop culture
projects -- points to the wide range of uses that are possible today on
the National Information Infrastructure,"said James Hake, chairman of the
NII Awards and a principal of Access Media Inc.

"The NII Awards are an important acknowledgment of the work of Digital
Equipment Corporation, the California Secretary of State and its entry,
The California Elections Server,"said Hake. Digital is clearly a leader in
the Internet industry developing innovative ways to utilize information
technology," he commented.

Digital Equipment Corporation formed a partnership with the California
Secretary of State and the Teale Data Center of Sacramento in order to be
the first state in the United States to broadcast election returns over
the Internet. Internet users saw a full-blown multimedia news center
giving start-to-finish graphical results, as well as in-depth information
about the candidates, propositions, campaign spending, and more. At that
time, it was the largest live Internet project ever organized. At one
point there were over 300,000 files per hour being accessed and in a 24
hour period over 1,500,000 requests were processed by the Election Server.
This unique application formed a new hybrid news media combining the
technical depth of newspapers with the immediacy of TV.

Brian Reid, Director of Digital's Palo Alto based Network Systems
Laboratory, remarked, "Digital is pleased to have been nominated for the
NII award. As the leader in the Internet Industry we are excited about the
way internet is influencing the way we learn, buy, do business, socialize
and entertain ourselves. Digital will continue to work with the business
community to explore new creative business uses."

On the California Elections Server Bill Jones, Secretary of State,
commented, " It is my highest priority to increase voter participation in
the democratic process. I will continue my efforts through such private
and public partnerships to provide critical, timely information through
the use of on-line technology. As the state of California continues to
maintain its leadership position, I intend to enhance this service for
future elections making our citizens better informed voters."

Tony Lee, Assistant Director of Marketing for the Teal Data Center said,
"This cooperative project is another example of Teale's commitment to
making government work for its citizens." The Teal Data Center is
California's largest government data center.

Digital's project was evaluated through the NII Awards' "Virtual Judging
System," a system linking more than 130 judges and enabling them to share
comments and submit ballots independent of time and location. The system
was developed by Price Waterhouse, Access media and Lotus Development
Corporation.

Digital and the State of California will join all other entries as part of
a worldwide Website and database designed to provide examples of how
individuals, community groups and businesses can use and benefit from the
NII.

The NII Awards are sponsored by more than 70 industry, community, and
government organizations. Six winners will be named in Washington, D.C.,
on July 12, 1995.

The NII Awards are produced by Access Media Inc., based in Santa Monica,
CA. as part of a public education program to accelerate the development
and use of the NII.
