EXABYTE AND HEWLETT-PACKARD TO OFFER HIGH-END 4MM STORAGE AUTOMATION
PRODUCT

New Product Combines HP's Popular DDS-2 DAT Drives with Exabyte's Storage
Automation Expertise

BOULDER, Colo., June 20, 1995--Two of the biggest names in the tape storage
industry--Exabyte Corp. (NASDAQ: EXBT) and Hewlett-Packard Company-plan to
provide cost-effective 4mm storage automation for large PC networks and
mid-sized UNIX networks. The Exabyte EXB-218 4mm Tape Library combines
HP's DDS-2 4mm digital audio tape (DAT) drives along with Exabyte's tape
library design, robotics and mechanisms. The EXB-218 will be available
through Exabyte distributors worldwide beginning June 26,1995.

"By bringing together our respective strengths HP's in the area of 4mm
DDS-2 DAT drives and Exabyte's in the area of storage automation--we can
provide a product with superior performance, reliability and
functionality," said Peter V. Kehrendt, Exabyte's chairman of the board,
president and chief executive officer.

The EXB-218 combines two tape drives with robotics and up to 19 4mm data
cartridges in a compact, secure enclosure. For end users operating in
multi-server network environments who prefer 4mm technology, the
feature-rich EXB-218 is ideal for automating all facets of data storage
management. High capacity of 152 gigabytes and an overall throughput rate
of 120 megabytes per minute, or 55 gigabytes in an eight-hour timeframe,
meets the requirements of demanding backup and restore applications. A
pennies-per-megabyte storage cost combined with rapid file access time of
less than one minute benefits hierarchical storage management and
automated archiving applications. In addition, the EXB-218 is designed to
work with software (sold separately) developed by leading software vendors
such as Arcada, Cheyenne, Legato, Palindrome and others.

Incorporated in the EXB-218 is the HP C1533A DDS 2 DAT drive. With
compression, the drive provides 8 gigabytes of storage capacity and a
transfer rate of over 1 megabyte per second, 49-percent faster than any
competing DDS-2 drive. The HP C1533A is a market leader for DDS 2 drives.

"Because of its industry-leading performance, the HP DDS-2 drive is a good
match for the EXB-218's high quality and functionality," said Bob Kirk,
OEM business development manager for HP's Information Storage Americas
(ISA) Group in Fort Collins, Colo.

The quality of the EXB-218 Kirk referred to includes a reliability
specification of 750,000 mean-cycles-between-failure, or 1.5 million tape
mounts, the highest in the industry. This equates to an average of eight
years of trouble-free use. The EXB-218 is backed up with a two-year
warranty covering Exabyte parts and return-to-factory labor. One feature
which gives the EXB-218 a high level of functionality is its modular
design. Key components such as tape drives, data cartridges, robotics,
electronics and the power supply can be quickly removed and replaced. This
ensures easy servicing and a significant reduction in downtime.

"Because of its many outstanding features, the EXB-218 is an ideal product
for 4mm networked environments requiring high capacity and a very
sophisticated level of automation," said Ted Oade, Exabyte's storage
automation product manager. "The EXB-218 enables these environments to
take advantage of the library expertise Exabyte has gained in the field of
storage automation through its 8mm products. At the same time, the
investment these environments have made in 4mm technology can be
protected."

The design, robotics and many of the mechanisms of the EXB-218 are the same
as those found in Exabyte's industry-leading 8mm automated storage
devices. According to industry analysis from Dataquest, Exabyte held an
approximate 90-percent share of the 8mm library market in 1994, based on
units shipped.

In addition to the HP C1533A 4mm DAT drives, the EXB-218 is packaged with
high-quality EXATAPE DDS-2 DAT data cartridges, an EXATAPE cleaning
cartridge, a SCSI cable and an owner's manual. End users can expect to pay
approximately $8,000 [U.S.] for the EXB-218.

Exabyte said that it will continue to separately sell its own popular DDS-1
DAT drive, the EXB-4200.

Hewlett-Packard entered the information-storage business 24 years ago when
it began manufacturing and selling magnetic-disk drives. Today HP's
Information Storage Group has grown to more than $1.5 billion in revenue
(FY 1994) with a complete line of information-storage products for
computers and computer networks. HP solutions include disk drives and disk
arrays, magneto-optical drives and jukeboxes, digital audio-tape drives
and libraries, and quarter-inch-cartridge tape drives. Products are sold
through a variety of distribution channels under the SureStore brand name
as well as to OEM customers.

Hewlett-Packard Company is a leading global manufacturer of computing,
communications and measurement products and services recognized for
excellence in quality and support. HP has 98,600 employees and had revenue
of $25 billion in its 1994 fiscal year.

Headquartered in Boulder, Colo., Exabyte Corp. designs, manufactures and
markets a full range of tape storage products: 8mm, 4mm and quarter-inch
minicartridge tape drives, tape libraries and recording media. Exabyte is
the world's largest independent manufacturer focused solely on tape
storage products, which it ships to original equipment manufacturers,
value-added resellers and distributors.
