OS/2 Warp Connect (PowerPC Edition)

A Powerful Connection to the Future

NEW YORK, NY, June 19 ... IBM today previewed OS/2 Warp Connect (PowerPC
Edition), its award-winning 32-bit operating system running on the high
performance Power Series hardware line announced today by IBM.

OS/2 Warp Connect (PowerPC Edition) combines all of the proven,
market-leading reliability and robustness of OS/2 Warp with an
architecture designed to give customers a smooth path to the future. It is
a PowerPC super-client version of IBM's recently announced OS/2 Warp
Connect, its operating system software for connected users. OS/2 Warp
Connect (PowerPC Edition) is currently available through a test program
already in progress, and, based on the results of a final beta test cycle,
is planned to be generally available in the fourth quarter.

"OS/2 Warp Connect (PowerPC Edition) is the newest addition to the OS/2
Warp family of scalable operating systems which give power and reliability
to everything from notebooks to high-end servers," said Lee Reiswig,
general manager, IBM Personal Software Products. "To our customers, that
translates into openness, seamless upgradeability, efficient development
and ongoing investment protection. The PowerPC version of OS/2 Warp
Connect is a multiplatform technology built for the future."

Investments protected, future sure

"The ability of OS/2 Warp Connect (PowerPC Edition) to exploit the power of
a wide range of computers is exceptional," said Matt Hickman, systems
specialist, Chevron Information Technologies. "Whether it's running on our
laptops in the field or our high-powered systems and servers in the
office, OS/2 Warp Connect (PowerPC Edition) scales well across existing PC
platforms."

Only a simple port away from a powerful development platform

"OS/2 Warp's portability creates an excellent environment for application
development," said Joel Krautheim, president of SPG, a developer of
graphics programs. "It gives us an easy transition to the RISC platform by
enabling a quick recompile of 32-bit x86 applications to the PowerPC
version of OS/2, and is the best platform on which to build applications
that exploit the power of the RISC architecture from the ground up. Using
the beta development tools, we recompiled ColorWorks for OS/2 to a PowerPC
version in a single day."

A powerful connection for users on the road or at home

OS/2 Warp Connect (PowerPC Edition) provides a comprehensive set of
networking and communications software that allows users to connect to
existing networks. With advanced software, concurrent multiple sessions
and real-time graphics and video, OS/2 Warp Connect (PowerPC Edition) is a
super-client that opens and broadens a customer's resources. Networking
features include connectivity to industry-leading network operating
systems, full support for the Internet, built-in requesters for LAN Server
4.0, SNA and TCP/IP for OS/2 Version 3, which comes with a complete set of
applications for browsing the World Wide Web, mail and file transfer.
These features are enhanced by the multitasking prowess of OS/2 Warp,
which allows users to simultaneously connect to local/wide area networks
and to the Internet. All of this, including an easy-to-use integrated
installation utility, comes in one package, lowering cost and saving
time.

The IBM Microkernel architecture:
A framework designed with the future in mind

OS/2 Warp Connect (PowerPC Edition) is the first member of the OS/2 Warp
family of operating system software based on the IBM Microkernel
architecture. Over time, the microkernel will provide scalability and
portability across the OS/2 Warp product line, allowing customers to use
and reuse the same software base regardless of the hardware category --
from embedded systems to servers. This architecture also will benefit
developers by giving them a common code base that scales those hardware
categories and from which they can more efficiently develop applications
critical to their core business.

The award-winning 32-bit operating system . . .

Featuring IBM's highly-acclaimed Workplace Shell user interface and a
BonusPak of productivity applications and tools, OS/2 Warp Connect
(PowerPC Edition) has the look and feel of the award-winning OS/2, now in
its third release with nine million users worldwide. OS/2 Warp Connect
(PowerPC Edition) runs 32-bit OS/2 applications recompiled to exploit the
benefits of the PowerPC platform, as well as existing DOS and Windows x86
binary applications.

Plus a whole lot more

Utilizing the power of the RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer)
architecture, OS/2 Warp Connect (PowerPC Edition) has the power to handle
a broad new range of applications. It is also designed to take advantage
of applications containing Human-Centered functions, such as pen and
speech, that are built around the natural senses of sight, touch, and
sound to let users work more freely and intuitively, changing the way the
user interacts with the personal computer. Additional features include
multimedia, object frameworks, system management and security. OS/2 Warp
Connect (PowerPC Edition) is supported by IBM's unparalleled worldwide
service programs.

IBM also intends to provide application development offerings for OS/2 Warp
Connect (PowerPC Edition) which will deliver design and modeling
capabilities, a broad set of languages to build applications and an
applications management environment for effective team development. Other
products, features and components planned to be offered include
networking, systems management, data management and the IBM Developer
Connection Device Driver Kit, which will contain the source code and tools
for building device drivers on the IBM Power Series and x86 platforms.
