IEEE TO RELEASE IEEE/IEE ELECTRONIC LIBRARY ON CD-ROM -- THE FIRST OF
SEVERAL ELECTRONIC PRODUCT INITIATIVES

PISCATAWAY, NJ, U.S.A - June 12, 1995 -- The Institute of Electrical and
Electronics Engineers, Inc. (IEEE) announced today the development of a
new full-image, CD-ROM database called the IEEE/IEE Electronic Library
(IEL). The product, to be available January 1996, contains the full page
images of the entire collection of IEEE/IEE publications, including
journals, transactions, proceedings, standards and colloquia published
since 1988. This is the core collection of published information in
electrical and electronic engineering and computer science. Researchers
and librarians can search the index, a subset of the INSPEC Database
produced by the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE), then display
and print the full page image, including all charts, graphs, diagrams,
photographs and illustrative material found in the original publication.

The IEEE plans to continue development of other electronic products in
addition to the IEL. "The development of our own digital library allows us
to offer many different product subsets and alternative formats of the
IEEE collection of publications," said Kent Ekberg, Director of Electronic
Products, IEEE. "It is our goal, as an engineering and computing
membership association, to offer our members and customers
state-of-the-art technology for accessing the information they need in the
most convenient and cost-effective way."

The Windows search interface for the IEL is being developed through an
agreement with Sony Electronic Publishing Company. IEEE chose Verity Topic
Agents and Adobe Acrobat software as the foundation of the end-user
system. The Topic search engine integrated with Adobe Acrobat provides an
ideal solution for searching bibliographic data and accessing PDF data via
CD-ROM.

The IEEE collection has been offered since 1992 under the name IEEE/IEE
Publications Ondisc (IPO), produced and distributed by UMI Company. IEEE
will assume responsibility for the image production, interface
development, sales and distribution for the Electronic Library, beginning
in January 1996. UMI will continue to produce IPO for current subscribers
throughout 1996; however, subscribers will be able to transition to IEL at
the end of their subscription term.

The price for IEL is $33,995 for a backfile of approximately 250 image
discs and indexes for a stand-alone workstation. IEEE/IEE print
subscribers qualify for a discount if they continue to subscribe in the
print format. This discount structure permits subscriber rates as low as
$18,995 for customers who subscribe to all IEEE and IEE publications. A
networking edition will be released in 1997.

Sales and technical support will be handled through an agreement with
Information Handling Services, Inc. (IHS) based in Englewood, Colorado. A
leading supplier of technical information services for over 35 years, the
company has sales and technical support representatives in 80 countries
worldwide.

The IEEE is a non-profit membership organization with 37 technical
societies and councils in 150 countries. The IEEE publishes nearly 100
journals and magazines, as well as hundreds of conference proceedings,
representing 25% of the world's literature on electronics, electrical
engineering, computer science, applied physics, and information
technology. In addition, the IEEE is the world's largest technical
society, with approximately 320,000 members throughout the world.

The Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE), headquartered in the United
Kingdom, is the largest professional engineering society in Europe with
over 135,000 members in all aspects of electrical, electronic and
manufacturing science and engineering. In addition to a full range of
professional journals, magazines, conferences and books, the IEE produces
the INSPEC database, the world's largest bibliographic reference service
in the fields of physics, electrical engineering and computing.

Verity, Inc., headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., develops and markets
the Topic family of information retrieval tools and applications for
publishing and disseminating information. The company's products and
services are used by more than 650 organizations worldwide as well as by
hundreds of development partners.
