MetaSolv Introduces PowerPatterns for PowerBuilder

PowerPatterns Accelerate PowerBuilder Developers Through the
Object-Oriented Learning Curve

ORLANDO, Fla., June 5, 1995 -- MetaSolv Software, Inc., introduces
PowerPatterns( for PowerBuilder, a new line of products designed to
complement its existing PowerFrame( product line of reusable class
libraries, custom objects and utilities for PowerBuilder developers.
Patterns, the latest breakthrough in object-oriented development, provide
a language for communicating complex design techniques and making them
easy to understand and use. PowerPatterns provide developers commonly
recognized patterns, as defined by leading industry experts, in familiar
PowerBuilder objects and script code.

"New PowerBuilder developers are often overwhelmed with the design options
available to them, and tend to fall back on non-object-oriented techniques
they have used before. This eliminates achieving many of the benefits when
using a tool like PowerBuilder", states Mark Nielsen, manager of product
research and development at MetaSolv. "Class Libraries addressed this
problem, to a certain degree, by providing pre-defined design solutions;
however, they failed to provide developers the means to extrapolate those
designs and apply them to scenarios outside the scope of the class
library. PowerPatterns package design expertise in an easily digestable
way as 'ready-made' design solutions. New PowerBuilder developers who
become familiar with these patterns can apply them immediately to design
problems; thereby accelerating through the object-oriented learning
curve," concluded Nielsen.

Tangible Benefits

Use of PowerPatterns produces many tangible benefits for PowerBuilder
developers. Its common communication language or vocabulary makes it easy
for developers to communicate design issues and explore alternatives.
Because Patterns embody proven design techniques, they enable developers
to avoid choosing designs that compromise reusability, and improve
productivity by getting a design 'right' faster. Patterns also improve the
documentation and maintenance of applications by eliminating the
reverse-engineerring process that occurs to discover how and why an
existing object behaves the way it does.

Patterns Provided

Design patterns provided in the first release include the Observer pattern
which addresses the design of managing complex changes or synchronization
of objects, the Adaptor Pattern which deals with interfacing objects from
different systems or perhaps interfacing objects the developer has built
from scratch with purchased objects from other vendors, and the Mediator
Pattern which directs or manages the interaction of objects such as the
interdependencies of controls or data elements on a window. Additional
patterns provided include the Callout, Composite and Strategy Patterns.

Pricing and Availability

PowerPatterns consists of object oriented design models, reusable code,
extensive tutorials and examples, and online and hardcopy reference
documentation. PowerPatterns V1.0 has a suggested retail price of $295 per
developer or $2360 per single server. It will be available late third
quarter of 1995.

MetaSolv Software, Inc., Dallas, Texas, was founded in 1992 to develop and
market a new alternative to packaged software, reusable class libraries,
based on object oriented, client/server development tools. MetaSolv
Software is a leading Powersoft CODE partner. The company's first line of
products, PowerFrame, provides a suite of reusable class libraries and
custom objects and utilities for PowerBuilder and has enjoyed widespread
acceptance. MetaSolv's second line of products, ASAP, is a set of business
templates and Windows-based client/server applications that support the
Ordering and Provisioning of Switched and Special Access Services and
Circuits for the telecommunications industry.
