Targeted at data-storage applications, a CD-erasable format proposed by
Philips Electronics N.V., Eidenhoven, The Netherlands, has received strong
support by companies such as IBM, Ricoh, Hewlett-Packard, Mitsubishi
Chemical Co., Mitsumi Electric Co., Matsushita Kotobuki Electric
Industries, Sony, 3M and Olympus. Drives that incorporate the CD-E
technolgy will be able to read and write CD recordable disks; write, read
and rewrite CD-E disks; and read all CD-ROM disks. While CD-R disks are
useful in small-office and one-time recording applications, the CD-E
allows disk reuse and data modifications. This enables the media to serve
as a reusable medium for backup applications as well as for many
data-intensive applications, in which large blocks of data get updated.
New CD-ROM drives will also be able to read the CD-E disks. To do that,
only a small circuit change in the current CD-ROM drives will have to be
done to support the CD-E format.
