PHOENIX TECHNOLOGIES ELIMINATES PC INDUSTRY'S MEMORY FOOTPRINT PROBLEM WITH
PCMCIA SOFTWARE

PCM+ GIVES USERS FULL USE OF PC CARDS PLUS MORE AVAILABLE MEMORY!

Santa Clara, CA, May 30, 1995 -- Phoenix Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ:PTEC),
the world's leading supplier of system-level firmware, today announced a
new benchmark for PCMCIA software memory footprint - total functionality
in under 15Kb. PhoenixCARD Manager Plus (PCM+) v3.2, the latest version of
Phoenix's PCMCIA software, provides users with the functionality and
versatility they demand from their PC Cards plus the small memory
footprint they require. By utilizing efficient software development
techniques combined with advanced memory management technology, Phoenix is
the only company to provide this level of functionality. All future
versions of PCM+ will contain this functionality.

Currently, full PCMCIA solutions from other software vendors consume 90 -
110Kb of valuable memory. So called "lite" solutions support a very
limited set of PC Cards in order to reduce memory. Both of these solutions
create major technical support issues for end-users. With PCM+ v3.2, users
get complete PCMCIA functionality without making any tradeoffs.

"Phoenix's philosophy regarding PC Card software development has been and
continues to be robust and equivalent PC Card support across multiple
environments," stated Howard Cohen, vice president of [1m[3][0mportable
systems at Phoenix Technologies. "Solutions which deny full PC Card
support in order to reduce memory footprint are doing a fundamental
disservice to the industry and to the end-user."

Using PC Cards with Other Applications

Today's PC user demands more memory, better mobility, and more power. The
PC is a vehicle for users to log onto computer networks both remotely and
locally, to take advantage of multimedia capabilities, to play games, to
educate themselves, and to send and receive electronic messages. PC Cards
are being used to achieve many of these capabilities on notebook
computers. The problem for most PC Card users has been the inability for
their PC to support all of the additional software these advanced
capabilities require.

Multimedia drivers such as CD-ROM utilities and sound, network drivers, and
DOS-based games as well as PCMCIA software all demand memory space. The
memory space being utilized for many of these drivers is in a region which
is not expandable due to constraints in the original design of the PC
architecture. PCMCIA software other than PhoenixCard Manager v3.2 requires
as much as 90-110KB of memory - nearly one-fifth of the total available
space!

By reducing the memory footprint of its PCM+ software, Phoenix makes room
for other drivers and software which can be used in conjunction with PC
Cards - a major achievement for PC Card technology. Eliminating the memory
footprint problem - one of the key issues plaguing the industry - will
dramatically improve user acceptance and adoption of PC Cards.
