QMS PREVIEWS ADVANCED IMAGE-ENABLED DOCUMENT MANAGEMENT TECHNOLOGY

May 31, 1995 - XPLOR Conference - Toronto, On - QMS Inc. (NYSE:AQM) QMS
today previewed advanced software technology which will significantly
extend the usability of the installed base of laser printers while
delivering a range of image enabled document management functions to a
variety of users. The suite of client/server software applications
together with standard laser print technology and other peripheral devices
will form a complete high-capacity, cost effective, digital imaging system
with capabilities beyond those of existing systems built on much higher
priced, specialized devices. While the new software is designed to work
with virtually any brand of laser print system, systems using QMS
image-enabled printers could benefit from better performance and
additional capabilities through QMS imaging host-based software.

The QMS Imaging Office suite of products will represent a new level of
integrated functionality in open systems based document management
products. Designed to be the information enabling center of a network
environment, the system aims to provide integrated support for standard
electronic printing, image/document capture, image processing for document
imaging, (display, print, intelligent recognition, storage and retrieval),
digital copying services, mail services, FAX services, etc. In addition to
full capabilities for image and printer language processing the software
will provide server communications managers as well as network based
control of a number of devices which can be clients and servers on the
system (printers, optical disks, PCs, scanners, FAX I/O, etc.) QMS plans
to offer versions of the software and network support for Windows,
Macintosh and UNIX based systems operating in TCP/IP, Netware, Ethertalk
and LanMan protocols.

A typical system will consist of one or more SCSI-based scanner input
devices using QMS' 32-bit TWAIN source manager, server(s), communications
modems, special output devices (CD-ROM recorders, etc) all interconnected
via standard network connections. Documents will be "read" into the system
by a variety of methods and can be directed to one or more image-enabled
laser printers installed on the network to act as high performance,
high-quality digital photocopiers. The suite of software also allows these
"documents" to be saved and arranged in archives for later retrieval and
use. Once saved the "documents" can be retrieved using a QMS designed
browser application and directed to a printer or distributed via a variety
of messaging methods. The application suite consists of several modules,
including an image arranger, image browser, digital copier control, image
on demand retrieval system, peripheral support drivers, and a
comprehensive, easy to use, user interface.

This system has been under development for some time and is currently being
field tested in several locations. Announcement of definitive product
offerings and pricing is expected to occur in late summer.
