QUANTUM ANNOUNCES SUITE OF 2.5-INCH DRIVES WITH ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY FOR
MOBILE COMPUTER USERS

First independent storage company to combine MR head and PRML technologies

MILPITAS, Calif., May 31, 1995 - To give mobile computer users the same
performance and reliability they've come to expect from their desktop
systems, Quantum Corporation (NMS: QNTM) today announced a series of
2.5-inch drives that include advanced technology designed to dramatically
boost storage capacity, increase performance, and reduce power
consumption. Called the Quantum Europa series, the three new disk drives
provide 540 megabytes (MB), 810 MB, and 1080 MB of formatted storage
capacity for notebook users-supporting a wide variety of storage-intensive
applications from databases to multimedia presentations to edutainment.

The new drives, designed specifically for Pentium-class, Windows '95-based
portables, are based on two leading-edge technologies: magneto resistive
(MR) heads and a partial-response-maximum-likelihood (PRML) read channel.
While MR head technology allows more data to be packed per disk, PRML
allows more data bits to be packed on a track. This technology
combination, the first available from an independent drive manufacturer,
enables Quantum's Europa drives to achieve sizable storage capacity
increases in the 2.5-inch form factor. In addition, the fast internal rate
of the PRML channel allows the drives to spin at 3,800 RPM, reducing power
consumption while maintaining fast data throughput-important requirements
for today's notebook computer users.

"Today's notebook users are just as demanding as their desktop
counterparts-perhaps more so. They want greater functionality and ease of
use in an ever smaller package," said Michael Brown, president of
Quantum's Desktop and Portables Storage Group. "It was with these needs in
mind that we designed our Europa family. We incorporated many of the
technology features that have made our higher capacity drives so
successful into our most powerful mobile computing offering to date."

Europa Drives: Capacities for Every Notebook Computer User

With the Quantum Europa family of 2.5-inch drives, the company has
effectively doubled the storage capacity of its previous generation of
drives-anticipating the application-intensive needs of mobile users. The
Europa 540 offers subnotebook users 540 MB of formatted storage capacity
in a 12.5 millimeter-high package. The Europa 810 and 1080 offer 810MB and
1080MB in a 19 millimeters height, ideal for today's most powerful
notebook computers.

Superior Reliability and Power Conservation

For added durability and performance, Quantum Europa drives feature an
innovative magnetic latch, called ShockLock, that protects the drives from
short, non-operating shocks of up to 400 Gs.

For enhanced reliability, Quantum's leading data integrity feature,
Double-Burst Error Correction (ECC) on-the-Fly, corrects up to 48 bits of
data without interrupting sequential and random data transfers. This
second-generation ASIC and firmware solution results in faster data
throughput and increased data integrity.

To conserve battery power, the actuator motor on Europa drives can be shut
down after five seconds of inactivity without host intervention due to the
drive's innovative AutoIdle feature. With the AutoPark mode, the drive's
heads are automatically parked over the dedicated landing zone when the
AutoIdle is shut off. For energy efficient operation, Europa drives
support the power management modes defined by the AT Attachment/Common
Access Method (ATA/CAM), as well as the latest standards of the
Manufacturers Compatibility Committee (MCC). As a result, the Europa
drives can easily slide into position and connect directly to a
hard-mounted connector on a notebook computer's PC board.

All Europa drives are backed by a three-year warranty through Quantum's
authorized distributors.

Availability and Pricing

Evaluation units and volume production units of Quantum Europa drives will
be available CQ3 1995. The single unit OEM evaluation price for an AT
interface drive is as follows:

 $350 Europa 540
 $450 Europa 810
 $550 Europa 1080
