RACAL-DATACOM INTRODUCES FLEXIBLE MANAGEMENT FOR WAN ACCESS PRODUCTS ACROSS
PACKET NETWORKS

Cost-Saving Frame Relay, ATM and X.25 Now Can Carry Racal Diagnostics

May 24, 1995 -- SUNRISE, FL. -- The Racal-Datacom NMS 8020 Network
Management Server family, introduced today, extends Racal's leading wide
area network management capabilities across packet based networks such as
frame relay, ATM and X.25.

The NMS 8020 family allows legacy networks to manage their migration to the
packet-based services by encapsulating the Racal proprietary side channel
network management diagnostic protocol with UDP/IP (Universal Datagram
Protocol/Internet Protocol). The diagnostic information is transmitted
across the WAN with the LAN traffic, including SNMP.

"Legacy networks that have invested in Racal reliability and unique
features for their network management functions over the years can keep
and maintain that equipment while taking advantage of the cost-savings
achieved by going to the packet services -- frame relay, ATM and X.25,"
said Scott Bagnall, product manager. "The network management servers also
enable Racal WAN network management functions to be handled locally over
the LAN when WAN links are down.

The NMS 8020 makes full use of the robust nature of LAN architecture and
removes the need for out-of-band dedicated serial line transmission of
network management information. Even so, the out-of band serial diagnostic
channel connection can still be utilized to dial around the WAN outages to
maintain diagnostic communications using the reliable switched public
services like ISDN, SW56 and PSTN. The device does not require the use of
costly external router or terminal server ports, freeing those ports for
other uses and saving as much as $2,500 per remote site.

The NMS 8020 family makes the full complement of Racal-Datacom CMS 400
Racal Management System functions available to LAN-based networks. CMS 400
gives sophisticated, network-wide database management, performance
analysis and fault isolation capabilities from a convenient central site.

Working in conjunction with CMS 400 at the central site, the remote site
NMS 8020 provides management communications to several Racal products
including: Excalibur Digital Access Products (DAPs), Excalibur Access Node
(CAN) 2000, Excalibur ISX 5300 digital access multiplexer, Excalibur BRI
2000 ISDN terminal adapter and the CMS 6424 digital service unit.

The NMS 8023 for Ethernet networks and the NMS 8025 for Token Ring networks
are available now in North America. List price for the NMS 8023 (Ethernet)
is $295 and the NMS 8025 (Token Ring) is $495.
