STUDENTS BECOME "CULTURAL REPORTERS" WITH NEW MULTICULTURAL KIT FROM TOM
SNYDER PRODUCTIONS

Watertown, MA, May 16, 1995 -- Tom Snyder Productions announces the release
of Cultural Reporter, a multicultural curriculum kit that involves
students in grades 6-12 in their communities as writers, historians,
photographers, reporters, and film makers who investigate and document
local history and cultural interaction.

Cultural Reporter is an outgrowth of the Smithsonian's Columbus
Quincentenary exhibit, "American Encounters," which traces the development
of a multicultural society in the Rio Grande Valley of New Mexico. The
exhibit, on display at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of
American History, demonstrates that mutual respect among different
cultural groups is crucial to their successful coexistence. Cultural
Reporter brings the message of the exhibit to classrooms everywhere. It
gives teachers and students an opportunity to develop a sense of
commitment to their local community and see the roots of conflict and
harmony between different cultural groups.

The Cultural Reporter kit includes 30 Reporter's Handbooks, a comprehensive
Teacher's Guide, a disk of writing templates for computer word processors,
and the "American Encounters" video and study guide.

Teachers and students can also share projects and project ideas across the
country by using the Cultural Reporter bulletin board in the Tom Snyder
Productions area on America Online (keyword: TSP), and worldwide via the
Internet. The entire kit costs $179.95.

Cultural Reporter is a creative, hands-on way for students to learn about
and appreciate the diversity of cultures within their own communities. As
cultural reporters, students conduct research and interviews, and document
issues of importance to the local community. They work together to design
a final product which includes the results of their research, plus photos
and other relevant information which can then be presented to the
community. Cultural Reporter is appropriate for a variety of curricular
areas, and it has been used successfully in English, history, foreign
language, special education, and ESL classes.

Here's how Cultural Reporter works: A collection of six beautifully
photographed cultural documentaries from the "American Encounters" exhibit
offers students vivid examples of how to be cultural reporters. The
handbooks then guide students through investigation, interviewing, and
documentation techniques for examining their communities in depth. The
Teacher's Guide includes lesson plans, activities, and reproducibles.

Larry Torres, a foreign language teacher at Taos High School in Taos, New
Mexico, piloted Cultural Reporter in his classes. The students were very
positive about the results of their projects. As one student put it,
"[Cultural Reporter] isn't about a bunch of dates that I wasn't there to
see. It tells me something about me. I'm history, too!"
