STARNINE SHIPS WebSTAR, INDUSTRIAL STRENGTH UPGRADE TO MACHTTP

-- Increased performance, greater ease-of-use, and low introductory price
make WebSTAR the price/performance leader --

BERKELEY, Calif. June 5, 1995 -- StarNine Technologies, Inc. today
announced availability and special introductory pricing for WebSTAR, which
offers significantly increased performance, easier server administration
and greater customizability than its shareware predecessor, MacHTTP.
WebSTAR makes it easier than ever for anyone with a Macintosh and an
Internet connection to create a powerful World Wide Web site. WebSTAR
users can publish any Macintosh file on the Web, including GIF and JPEG
images, Adobe Acrobat files as well as QuickTime movies. WebSTAR is also
fully compatible with any HTML (HyperText Markup Language) documents. The
new features and performance improvements in WebSTAR make it ideally
suited for traditional Macintosh customers such as marketing and
communications professionals, desk-top publishers, education users, as
well as larger IS organizations.

TWO VERSIONS: ONLINE AND ENHANCED CD-ROM

WebSTAR is now available for purchase electronically via the Internet at
http://www.starnine.com. WebSTAR with an expanded suite of tools will be
available on floppy disc and CD-ROM at the end of this month (see attached
CD-ROM features sheet). The online version available now includes WebSTAR
Server software, AppleScript, MacTCP, the documentation and an easy
installer. Currently, the price for the online version of WebSTAR is $99
for MacHTTP users (registered as of May 2, 1995) and $349 for new users.
After July 31, 1995 the price for WebSTAR increases to $495 for

MacHTTP users (registered as of May 2, 1995) and $795 for new users.
Significant discounts are available for educational institutions.
Additional pricing information is available at

"MacHTTP started a revolution in Web-top publishing by making serving
documents on the Web as easy as printing to a LaserWriter," commented
David Thompson, Director of Marketing at StarNine. "WebSTAR carries this
revolution forward by adding tremendous power and performance underneath
the server's new, graphical administrative interface."

WebSTAR, which runs native on Power Macs, now takes full advantage of
Apple's Thread Manager to achieve throughput three to four times faster
than MacHTTP. WebSTAR can easily serve hundreds of thousands of
connections per day and is price-competitive with UNIX alternatives.

"We believe that when comparing Web server price performance on UNIX vs.
Macintosh, it's important to compare apples to apples," said Chuck
Shotton, senior vice president of engineering at StarNine, and the primary
author of WebSTAR. "If you compare $10,000 worth of Mac's vs. a single
$10,000 UNIX workstation, you can buy or re-use several Mac's and, with
mirrored copies of WebSTAR installed on each, create a powerful array of
computers that behave like a single Web site to browsers on the Net and
easily outpaces the performance of a single UNIX workstation. Add to this
equation the high-cost of UNIX expertise, and there's no doubt that
Macintosh wins the price/performance contest hands down."

EASIER SERVER ADMINISTRATION, IMPROVED SCRIPTING AND LOGGING

WebSTAR's improved administrative interface is designed to be easy to use,
allowing both local and secure remote configuration and monitoring of
multiple Web servers from a single location. WebSTAR provides a graphical
interface for all options, including those which previously required
editing the ASCII configuration file in MacHTTP.

WebSTAR also includes a significantly improved interface for its CGI
(Common Gateway Interface) add-ons. The server is now completely
scriptable and all of its functions are accessible to CGI's and external
applications via AppleEvents. With AppleScript and other OSA-compliant
scripting systems such as Userland's Frontier,

WebSTAR can publish any information contained in any Macintosh application.
For example, if a company's information is in a FileMaker Pro database,
Web client users can query it via HTML forms to get the data using the
FileMaker CGI for WebSTAR.

WebSTAR now supports administrator-defined actions for pre- and
post-processing of URLs (universal resource locator) as well as
administrator-defined actions. Pre- and post-processing of URLs allow
administrators to re-direct all incoming URLs to any application on the
server. Administrator-defined actions allow URLs of a specified type to
be handled according to customizable suffix extensions.

WebSTAR also supports customizable log message formats, so users can
specify a wide range of information about server usage. Some of the new
log properties include information about the number of bytes transmitted
and how long the transmission took, the identity of the WWW client
software, and the user name if authentication was required. Like MacHTTP,
WebSTAR supports user name/password security as well as per-domain and
per-IP address access privileges.

ANY MAC CAN BE A WEB SERVER

"WebSTAR is so easy that a sixth-grader can set it up," explained Stephen
Collins, WebMaster for the Web 66 project, a K-12 World Wide Web education
outreach program at the University of Minnesota,
<URL:http://Web66.coled.umn.edu/WebMaster.html>. "In fact, we gave two of
our sixth-grade students an old SE/30 and WebSTAR. They had a running Web
server 25 minutes later."

The basic requirements for any Macintosh to become a Web site include:
System 7, a minimum of 4 megabytes of RAM, a full-fledged connection to
the Internet (anything from a SLIP or PPP modem connection all the way up
to a T3 line) and WebSTAR, which includes MacTCP software.

"The rule of thumb for setting up your Web site is 'if you can surf, you
can serve.' Many people don't realize that they already have everything it
takes to setup their own Web server by just adding WebSTAR," noted
Thompson. "Depending on how busy you expect your Web site to be, you can
use anything from a Mac Plus all the way up to a high-end Power PC to run
WebSTAR. And it's easy to upgrade to a more powerful processor as your
site becomes more popular."
