Sybase Programs Channel 4 For Success

UK'S CHANNEL 4 IMPLEMENTS SYBASE SQL SERVER FOR NEW CLIENT/SERVER PROGRAM
COMMISSIONING SYSTEM.

EMERYVILLE, CA, June 13, 1995 -- Sybase, The Enterprise Client/Server
Company, today announced that Channel 4, the second largest independent
television channel in the United Kingdom, has implemented SYBASE
client/server database technology as the foundation for its new television
program commissioning system. Channel 4's commissioning activities involve
the external purchasing of programs, rather than traditional production
within a TV network. Code named PIRATE (Program Information Report and
Automated Transmission Environment), the commissioning system runs on the
television company's DEC/ALPHA workstations to manage the administration
of commissioning, purchasing and funding of television programs. The new
client/server system will employ the following System 10 products: SQL
Server 10, SQL Server Monitor, and SQL Server Manager.

SYBASE SQL Server replaces the company's previous database running on a DEC
VAX cluster. SQL Server brings to Channel 4 all the benefits of an open
systems architecture, empowering more users to access critical information
quickly, facilitating the monitoring and management of the channel's
programming activities. John Foster, project manager at Channel 4
explains, "Our objectives to improve efficiency and streamline our
commissioning process were such that our old system simply couldn't handle
the requirements. SQL Server gives us the opportunity we were looking for
to move into a true client/server environment and benefit from the
connectivity and compatibility that a truly open system offers."

"We are pleased to have been chosen as the database vendor of choice for
Channel 4's new client/server system," said Dominic Gattuso, Jr., senior
vice president and general manager, Sybase worldwide sales and field
operations. "The SYBASE technology will enable significant improvements in
Channel 4's efficiency, accuracy, and productivity in delivering
innovative programming to the UK public."

PIRATE

PIRATE has been built to service Channel 4's critical commissioning
efforts. Channel 4 operates as an electronic publisher, purchasing
programs from external sources, rather than producing them from within the
station. SQL Server has been implemented within the three commissioning
departments of Channel 4: Programs, Finance and Acquisitions. It provides
commissioning editors, program finance managers and acquisition executives
with the front-end tools necessary to track a project right through the
system. As a Windows-based system, PIRATE provides greater integration and
a more consistent graphical interface throughout the three departments.
The pilot system went on-line in September 1994 and is currently being
implemented throughout the three departments.

CHANNEL 4

With a 10% share of the television audience, Channel 4 is the second
largest independent television channel in the UK. Its focus is to cater to
the tastes and interests of audiences and is funded entirely on commercial
revenue.
