Record Price/Performance Benchmark Achieved With Sybase SQL Server 10 on
Intel-Based Platform

BENCHMARK CONFIRMS MAINFRAME-CLASS PERFORMANCE ACHIEVABLE ON INTEL-BASED
PLATFORM WITH SYBASE SQL SERVER 10

EMERYVILLE, CA, June 14, 1995 -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise Client/Server
Company, today announced that SYBASE SQL Server 10 has achieved the best
audited price/performance results ever recorded on an Intel-based system
running the Transaction Processing Council Benchmark C (TPC-C). SQL Server
10 achieved a throughput of 1,516.77 tpmC (transactions per minute)
running on a 4-processor Compaq ProLiant 4500 Server under Novell's
UnixWare 2 at a cost of only $319 per transaction. The benchmark, run by
Compaq, is an initial result of the recently announced marketing agreement
between Sybase and Compaq.

"We are thrilled to receive this world-record TPC-C price/performance for
SQL Server 10 along with Novell and Compaq," said David Sohm, Sybase vice
president of channel and partner marketing. "By working together with
these companies in tuning our products specifically for their environment,
we are giving our customers what they have been asking for: a complete
hardware/software combination with mainframe-class client/server
performance at reduced PC prices. This benchmark also further confirms the
price/performance leadership customers have come to expect from SYBASE SQL
Server."

"This benchmark is truly mainframe-class performance on a mass market
server. This helps meet customer demands for high-volume, low-cost
components to build their enterprise systems, greatly reducing expense and
increasing productivity. We are very excited that our close relationship
with Sybase and Compaq has resulted in these record TPC-C numbers," said
Mike DeFazio, executive vice president and general manager of Novell's
UNIX Systems Group. "Along with Sybase and Compaq, Novell has proven that
high-volume, industry-standard hardware and software can deliver
world-record price/performance. Our customers can now deploy enterprise
systems configured from readily available products and save up to hundreds
of thousands of dollars per system."

ABOUT THE TPC-C BENCHMARK

The TPC-C Benchmark simulates a wholesale business data processing system
with combined operational On-Line Transaction Processing (OLTP) and batch
reporting and processing. Unlike the earlier TPC-B benchmark, which
performs simple debit/credit transactions and does not model actual users,
the TPC-C benchmark includes a mixed transaction environment of order
entry and accounts receivables combined with batch processes that generate
shipping orders and invoices and checks product inventory levels.

SQL Server 10 holds the record for the top two published and audited
price/performance results ever achieved running the TPC-C benchmark. A
summary of the results follow:

TOP THREE LEADERS IN PRICE/PERFORMANCE ON A TPC-C BENCHMARK
